Kevin O'Brien, Digital Editor at Sun Times Network

The public in Mexico won’t have to worry about dropped almost $100 to watch the Fight of the Century between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Because it will be aired by two TV stations, Televisa and Azteca, completely free of charge.

From CBS Sports:

“Televisa and Azteca must be recognized for their great commitment, for bringing to Mexico this bout for free,” the World Boxing Council told TMZ. “This has never, ever happened in any country of the world.”

Of course, Mexico is heavily invested in the fight. The Mexican Tourism Board is sponsoring the fight and the official beer of the fight is Tecate, which is based out of Monterrey, Mexico. The two sponsors helped the Fight of the Century bring in a record $13.2 million in sponsorship money.

And, even though an entire country won’t have to purchase pay-per-view to see the fight, the sales generated via PPV should smash yet another record.

Concurso: 'American Idol for Mexican Opera Singers'

April 14, 2015

Soprano Yamel Domort won the Herman Marcus Memorial Prize in the Opera San Miguel 2015 'Concurso,' an event dubbed 'American Idol for Mexican opera singers.' (San Miguel Opera/Concurso)

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico - A singing competition in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico helps homegrown talent graduate to the world stage.

Every spring, dozens of young and undiscovered opera singers descend on the pretty colonial Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende to sing their lungs out for the chance to be among the ten finalists in the Concurso, an event dubbed "American Idol for Mexican opera singers."
The competition is the flagship event of Opera San Miguel, a festival held within the Teatro Angela Peralta, a neoclassical jewel box named in honor of the 19th-century soprano known as "The Mexican Nightingale."
John Bills, Artistic Director (R), and First Prize Winner, César Delgado
Similar to the rules of the American reality show, only one singer will claim first place, but all ten finalists are winners. The organization's mission is to nurture talent, so each finalist receives a prize—from grants (up to 200,000 pesos, or about $14,000) to worldwide performance opportunities. The money is to be used only for furthering the careers of the singers, many of whom come from humble backgrounds.
As an added bonus, the event also provides world-class entertainment for the community, about a fifth of which is expat Americans and Canadians. "A lot of people would not put opera and a competitive sport in the same thought," says Paul Merriman, one such expat who splits his time between this cobblestoned mountain town and Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Though not an opera buff, Merriman considers the event to be "one of the most thrilling experiences of my life." The excitement of the Grand Finale is compounded by a series of celebratory dinners, where locals get to hobnob with the contestants. "All competitions are more fun when you know something about the competitors," he adds.

Before the finale, contestants spend a week being "groomed," which often involves private career, language, and drama coaching. Beyond this, they attend a master class; this year's teachers were celebrated Mexican tenor Javier Camarena, who gave a bravura performance at the Metropolitan Opera last year, and renowned U.S. soprano Maureen O'Flynn.

The event is spearheaded by an exuberant American couple: John Bills, a retired tenor who sang in thousands of performances at the Met alongside colleagues such as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, and his wife, Shari Alexander, a former chef/restaurateur in the Hamptons on Long Island.

Since 2008 the Concurso has been an annual event, with one break, making this year the competition's seventh. Bills began as a judge and was invited to take over as artistic director in 2010; Alexander is the event planner and in charge of raising money. As a result of her fundraising chutzpah, the Concurso is the only fully, privately funded event of its type in Mexico. The town's Rosewood and La Puertocito hotels are two key sponsors.

Bills and Alexander's track record with the event is impressive. One of the Concurso's winning singers went on to debut at the Met opposite Anna Netrebko; another was one of two chosen for a master class with Domingo; and yet another won first place in a prestigious Montreal competition, facing singers hailing from France, Germany, and Italy.

Having grown from a small regional contest to one of the most important talent showcases in Mexico, the Concurso is now giving voice to formerly unheard artists. "This is a culture of music that goes back to the Aztecs and Mayans," says San Miguel resident Judy Hadlock. "And the world is now getting a chance to hear it."

Although it will not be ready for Semana Santa holidays, work on the Carpa Olivera saltwater swimming pool in Olas Altas has advanced approximately 60 percent, says the municipality.

The goal of the revitalization project is to rescue the pool which due to neglect fell into disrepair and became dangerous for swimmers.

The saltwater pool was popular especially during summer months.
The saltwater pool was popular especially during summer months.

Personnel from the municipal public works department are presently working on the construction of a water slide, water discharge pipes, a cistern to hold water for an interactive fountain, an access ramp and public bathrooms.

Structural elements are now finished, the municipal press release stated, and work will begin shortly on the flooring.

Work has been interrupted or slowed occasionally due to high seas washing over the retaining walls, but it is expected the tides will soon recede and work can continue without delay.

Yet to done is the installation of benches, painting of walls, installation of electrical wiring, lamps, “intelligent” fountains and construction of a storage shed.

The municipality has invested 4,645,918 pesos in remodeling the once popular swimming pool. Work on the project is expected to be completed in the first two weeks of May.

Mexico, Germany to host NFL games? League explores markets

nfl.com
By Albert Breer
NFL Media reporter
March 26, 2015

A potential return to Los Angeles dominated the headlines leading into the NFL Annual Meeting earlier this week. Inside the room, owners were apprised that the league is being just as aggressive beyond the borders of its home country.

The NFL's efforts in London are still at the forefront, to be sure, but are only part of the equation now as the league is moving to broaden its efforts internationally. As the league sees it, the next group of countries to zero in on are Mexico, Canada and China, and it won't stop there.

"The work we're doing now is to ask, 'How do we accelerate the agenda in Mexico, Canada and China?'" said Mark Waller, NFL EVP, International. "Those would be our next stage, and we have offices in those three countries. And then, after those, where should be our focus? I think we've concluded that Brazil and Germany are the next two frontier markets, which is where the Pro Bowl idea comes from."

The league has, indeed, considered moving the February 2017 Pro Bowl to Brazil, in an effort to introduce the game and its stars to the world's fifth-largest populace. Germany, on the other hand, is developed as a football-watching public well beyond needing that, and will soon be in consideration for a regular-season game.

With that in mind, here's a look at where things stand following the owner' meetings ...

» Asked if the NFL remains on track to reach its goal of having a team full-time in London by 2022, Waller responded, "Absolutely." Had it not been for the Rugby World Cup, the league would've gone to four games in London this year, so it's a good bet that happens in 2016. Also, the NFL has a base of 40,000 fans who bought tickets for all three games for this year. The vast majority of those 40,000 are local to London, and bought tickets for all three games last year, which, in the league's eyes, represents the formation of a potential season-ticket base.

» The NFL sent a team to Mexico City two weeks ago to visit stadiums in the area, and left knowing that work still needed to be done. But the league is now starting to look at expanding the International Series to include regular-season games outside the U.K., with 2017 being a target, and Mexico and Germany are the focus of those efforts. In Germany, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf are the likeliest sites, with Berlin and Munich also under consideration.

» Additionally, the league is starting to look at options to bring some form of preseason football to Mexico in the short term -- it could be a team having a part of training camp there, it could be a set of scrimmages.

» The overriding issue in Germany (which had five of six NFL Europe teams, and has produced NFL players) remains television distribution. The league has been able to get its playoff games and the Super Bowl on the air, but has struggled to find a carrier for the regular season.

» Development in Canada remains steady. Meanwhile, the focus in China is on media rights, particularly digitally, with the league looking to distribute its product online.

The easiest way to look at this -- the NFL is comfortable enough with its growth in the U.K. to start similar projects elsewhere.

All three games in London have sold out, and part of the logistical problem there has been mitigated too with two resolutions passed in October that will help facilitate the growth to more than three games over the next few years.

The first one stipulates that if teams are relocating -- and one or two very well may be in 2016 -- they have to give up a home game in each of their transitional years, the seasons between the move being announced and a new stadium opening. The second says that teams that win a Super Bowl bid have to give up a home game within a five-year period.

Both should help keep the well of teams going to London (or elsewhere) from running dry, and allow continued growth as the league works toward a permanent franchise in the U.K. And of course, the International Series has moved to a phase that will test how a full-time franchise there would work, with the introduction of back-to-back games and a division game this year, and the possible addition of a December game and removal of the automatic byes afforded to traveling teams soon.

"We're testing it from a fan standpoint, from a stadium standpoint," said Waller. "Will the field stand up? We've had issues there, so this year will be big playing the games back-to-back. The rest of the work is internal, on what to do next. We're thinking through the next steps."

And clearly, all of those steps are being taken forward.

Many visitors to Mexico are attracted by the lure of angling for marlin, sailfish, tuna and other big-game species of fish.

With a new mobile application, the Mexican government hopes to make it simpler for visitors to engage in the sport.

Yesterday, at simultaneous events in Mexico City and San Diego, California, officials launched an application called Sportfishing México to connect fishermen and boaters to the website of Conapesca, the National Aquaculture and Fishing Commission.

Intended primarily for United States visitors heading south to fish, the application provides a connection to the Conapesca website, www.sportfishinginmexico.com. There, anglers will find vessel requirements, information regarding fishing permits and immigration documents, bag limits and other details, in both Spanish and English.

The site also specifies requirements for those wishing to fish within 19 kilometers of shore or within 18 and 80 kilometers or beyond.

A sportfishing manual, Visit Mexico brochure, a directory of marinas and a quick guide to sportfishing in Mexico are also documents that can be downloaded from the app.

Currently available only for Android devices, with an iOS version on the way, the app can be downloaded here.

A 2011 study estimated the value of sportfishing to Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, was about US $72 million annually, based on municipal estimates of 40,000 sportfishing visitors a year.

The operation took place one day after a young girl was injured by a horse.

Eight horses that were being rented at an access walkway to the beaches of Punta Cerritos and Playa Bruja in north Mazatlán were seized yesterday by municipal police who also detained the presumed owner of the horses.

Municipal police detained the man, Jesús Burgos, 53 years old, where the horses were saddled and ready to be rented, the agents commented.

The operation by municipal police took place around noon yesterday one day after it was reported two juveniles were knocked down by a horse in the access walkway to the beach beside hotel Riu in Cerritos.

It was later confirmed that it was just one young girl who was injured by a horse. Her family took her by car to a clinic for medical attention.

The seizure of the horses and detention of the owner were the result of an official notice from the Comité de Playas Limpias de Mazatlán (Clean Beaches Committee) which states that persons throwing garbage or contaminants on the beach, introducing horses or riding motorized vehicles on beaches will be detained.

Municipal agents commented the notice aims to promote clean beach areas and prevent contamination.
