Charges for Music a “Misunderstanding” says Municipality

by Maureen Dietrich
28 Mar 15
mazmessenger.com

Following the petition of independent musicians playing in an established locale to drop a recent requirement that they pay 500 pesos annually for a permit, Official Mayor Salvador Reynosa Garzón said yesterday it is official and those musicians do not have to pay.

He stated there is also a “confusion” surrounding the payment by businesses offering live music. Whereas originally it was stated to be 16,000 pesos annually, it is actually a maximum of 100 minimum salaries, or 6,760 pesos.

The rumoured amount of 16,000 pesos could have been confused with the amount payable for renewing liquor licenses which are currently due, he said.

The only musicians paying 500 pesos annually are those who work on public streets, he pointed out.

Municipality Cracks Down on Musicians, Live Music Venues

by Maureen Dietrich
20 Mar 15
mazmessenger.com

Musicians playing in Zona Dorada establishments are complaining that the office of the Official Mayor is interfering with their work.

The complaint arises from a notice from the municipality dated February 26, 2015 sent to owners of music venues or those in charge of hiring musicians advising them they need permits.

The notice, signed by Official Mayor Salvador Reynosa Garzón, states that musicians who play in establishments that promote, publicize and hold live musical events must also identify themselves to receive a permit costing 500 pesos annually.

Musicians affected by the notice have demanded an explanation as to where the permit money will go and why they need one.

The notice also stated that each establishment that offers live music will have to solicit a “show” permit that can cost up to 16,000 pesos annually.

Those playing in various places in the Zona Dorada pointed out they pay taxes and declared it unjust that they must pay extra. One musician who did apply to the municipality for a permit was charged 735.63 pesos and was given a receipt for “use of public streets” when, he said, he worked indoors in an establishment.

Par Vial traffic diversion when all four lanes of Av. Camarón Sábalo will be one way south to north begins on April 1 and will end April 5.

At a press conference yesterday, Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton and Cultura Director Raúl Rico announced new programs for the upcoming Semana Santa holiday during which it is expected upwards of 150,000 tourists will visit the city.

The idea is to make Mazatlán an innovative tourist destination, attractive and ideal for new investments that generate employment and social wellbeing, said the Mayor.

Speaking to reporters, the Cultura Director stated that in addition to the Bandródromo 2015 of four bandstands with live music in Olas Altas, there will be two parades with luminous floats and a spectacular fireworks display in the bahía del Viejo Mazatlán (Olas Altas).

The Bandródromo will take place April 1 through 4 from 8pm to 4am and admission is free. Music lovers can bring their own alcoholic beverages providing they are not in glass containers or other material that can be used as weapons.

Groups appearing at the four night party are Grupo Havana Libre, Banda Sihuey, Los Navegantes, Banda Hermanos Romero, Grupo Maz Show and Banda La Extrema Pura Canela. Stages will be erected in front of Calle Sixto Osuna, Calle Constitución at Olas Altas, in front of the Deer Monument and between the Ferrusquilla and La Mujer Mazatleca statues.

On Thursday, April 2 at 7pm there will be a parade of illuminated floats along the Malecón from Av. Rafael Buelna to Calle Rigoberto Lewis. The parade will be repeated on Saturday, April 4.

A spectacular fireworks display is programed for Friday, April 3 at 10:30pm in Olas Altas Bay.
For his part, Renato Ocampo explained the Par Vial traffic diversion when all four lanes of Av. Camarón Sábalo will be one way south to north begins on April 1 and will end April 5. The change in flow begins at the intersection of Av. Rafael Buelna and Av. Del Mar.

To offer alternative routes to private communities, El Cid will open its gates to public circulation. Marlin and Tiburón boulevards in Sabalo Country, Calle Lomas de Mazatlán and Av. Gaviotas will also be open for two-way traffic.

In order to alleviate the confusion encountered last year when drivers were unaware of the traffic flow change, Ocampo advised hotels and restaurants will be given flyers on the traffic change to be handed to guests and clients.

He also announced free bus fares for tourists and locals travelling Av. Camarón Sábalo and the addition of five parking lots.

Businesses Criticize Semana Santa Par Vial and Bandódromo

by Maureen Dietrich
17 Mar 15
mazmessenger.com

For business owners in the Zona Dorada and Olas Altas, strategies adopted by the municipal government for Semana Santa with respect to the Par Vial and Bandóromo prejudices their sales during the long holiday.

Following the announcement that for the second year the municipality will implement the Par Vial program in the Zona Dorada when all lanes on Av. Camarón Sábalo will be one way from south to north, some store owners on that street and Av. Gaviotas said the program will not improve their sales as happened last year and complained the city did not take them into account nor consult with them.

However, other owners were in agreement with the change saying it allows more people to enter the Zona Dorada to shop and eat.

Business owners in Olas Altas on the other side of the city say they do not want the Bandódromo bandstands near their shops and restaurants.

One restaurant owner stated that the municipality thinks their plan will succeed, but last year was a fiasco with people thinking it was Carnaval.

They also complained about beer stands that were erected last year in front of Olas Altas bars and restaurants, and agreed noise from the bands bothered clients. It is a bad idea, they told reporters, for the municipal government to put the Bandóromo in Olas Altas.

Creative goods No. 5 for Mexico’s GDP

mexiconewsdaily.com

mipcomA presentation during MIPCOM 2013.MIPCOM

Mexico is becoming widely known as one of the world’s major exporters — automotive, aerospace and agriculture are the sectors in which this country plays an international role.
But close on the heels of those sectors is another, less known export — creative goods, or entertainment content. Mexico is now one of the top 20 countries in the world in this regard, generating a full 7% of GDP and — according to ProMexico’s forecast for this year — revenues of US $27 billion.
These numbers make this sector the fifth most important for the Mexican economy.
Much of the exported product is television content, in particular the popular telenovela, for which the broadcast and production firm Televisa became internationally famous. Mexico produces more than 100,000 hours of television content every year, which is exported to 100 countries and translated into 30 languages or more.
The biggest market, of course, is the Spanish-speaking world and here Mexico leads the way as the world’s largest exporter of Spanish content. Last year, that content was viewed by more than 1 billion people around the world.
Next month, representatives of Mexico’s creative industry — cinema producers, post-production firms, software developers and video game makers among others — will be off to Cannes, France, for an annual exposition for the world of entertainment content.
MIPCOM is a gathering where content producers spend four days networking, in conferences, watching screenings of television and online content and visiting exhibits by 2,100 companies from around the world. More than 13,500 participants are expected.
This is only the second year that Mexico has participated in MIPCOM, and this year will be featured as the country of honor. Mexican content producers will be showcased in several events at the show, to be held October 13-16.
ProMexico communications spokeswoman Karla Mawcinitt Bueno said last year only 20 Mexican firms attended. This year, 105 businesses, out of a total of 1,500 in the sector, will attend, demonstrating their creative talents and meeting with global firms interested in what Mexico offers.
Of this country’s participation last year, Mawcinitt said “we never imagined the outcome of the conference and we’re very proud that there are so many small and medium-sized businesses ready to sell their products and ideas.”
She said the world’s Spanish-speaking population is one of the fastest-growing segments for the entertainment industry, and that Mexico offers an ideal platform for production.

Canadian foothills singer finds a musical home in Mazatlan

By: Tammy Rollie

Posted: Saturday, Jul 05, 2014

Singer/songwriter Brent McAthey, right, with Francisco Cordova, the secretary of <br />tourism in the Mexican State of Sinaloa, and partner Tanya Carrum. The trio will attend a private function during the Calgary Stampede to help promote tourism for Mazatlán, where McAthey now lives and produces The Brenster and Carrum Show.

An award-winning musician formerly of Turner Valley is bringing a piece of Alberta’s identity to a resort city on the west coast of Mexico.

Canadian country singer/songwriter Brent McAthey, also known as the Brenster, is enjoying great success with The Brenster and Carrum Show in Mazatlán, produced by himself and partner in life and music Tanya Carrum for two years.

The show is a “Vegas style” monthly concert series that puts Canadian country artists on stage at the Playa Mazatlán Beach Hotel from October to May.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be able to have a vision of producing a show like that and having it come to fruition and the fact the artists are excited about it,” he said.

McAthey secured an impressive line-up of country singers for the show’s third season, bringing such big Canadian country musicians as Patricia Conroy, Michelle Wright and Beverley Mahood to the stage.

“These are artists I’ve worked with and recorded with,” he said. “I wanted to give something back to them for treating me so good.

“Down the road I’m hoping there’s going to be some artists I haven’t even met, maybe some American acts as well.”

Foothills country music fans might remember McAthey from his performances at the Black Diamond Hotel, The River Roadhouse Bar & Grill in High River and the Longview Hotel, as well as various other venues across the foothills.

The two-time recipient of the Alberta Recording Industry Association’s Alberta’s Male Recording Artist of the Year in the 1990s grew up in Calgary and has been singing professionally his entire adult life.

McAthey released seven albums with four top 20 hits including “Wait for the Sun” and “Chevy Blue Eyes.”

More recently, Brenster was awarded the Mazzie Award for Best Musician of the Year in Mazatlán in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

McAthey now spends most of his time on stage under the sunny skies of Mazatlán, a city he fell in love with 30 years ago and found himself spending more time there ever since.

“I thought I’ve got to figure out a way to make a living there if I want to spend all this time in the sun,” he said.

McAthey did just that. He connected with country music fans from across Canada and the United States in Mazatlán and began performing weekly, returning north in the summer to perform for his fans across Canada and the United States.

The show, as well as Brenster’s Beach Bash at Diego’s Beach House Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. from mid-October to May, began getting attention from Mazatlán officials and in 2013 McAthey was appointed the State of Sinoloa’s official tourism ambassador by Mazatlán’s Tourism Board.

“Having the government believe in what I’m doing I’m pretty proud of that,” he said.

McAthey works with the tourism board and Mazatlán Hotel Association to get North Americans south to vacation in Mazatlán.

“There’s so much culture there and there’s a ton of music,” he said. “We are trying to bring awareness of what a great place Mazatlán is.”

McAthey is changing things up this month by bringing Mazatlán officials to the Calgary Stampede for a taste of western Canadian culture.

On July 5, McAthey will participate in a private function at the Ramada Hotel in downtown Calgary that will bring Sinaloa’s tourism secretary and governor, Mazatlán’s mayor and representatives from the Mazatlán Hotel Association together with 150 travel agents, tour operators, airline representatives and Calgary Stampede officials in a Mazatlán Stampede Fiesta.

Even the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors President Bob Thompson will be in attendance to “white-hat” the governor, McAthey said.

“It will pull all the travel people together,” he said. “It will give Mazatlán a bigger perspective of tourism.”

McAthey and Carrum are taking the opportunity to get on stage during the Calgary Stampede with a short version of The Brenster and Carrum Show at the Ramada Hotel July 4 and July 7 to the 11 from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There is no cost to watch the show.

Raul Rico Calls “Bandódromo” a Success

Raúl González Rico, Director of the Municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art of Mazatlán, and the person in charge of festivities along Olas Altas during Semana Santa, also called Bandódromo,” said that an estimated 112,000 people gathered along Olas Altas from Thursday through Sunday.
He said this was the first year of Bandódromo and it provided both locals and tourists a safe place to have fun during Semana Santa.
Families could have fun at the location from 8:00 pm in the evening until 4:00 am the following morning with free entertainment.
Raúl González Rico said the cost of the festivities was 848,000 pesos ($64,500), adding that the cost would be offset with contributions from the breweries that participated in Bandódromo.

Music, Music, Music

Banda Crucero will be on stage at the El Venadito (Deer) monument.
Banda Crucero will be on stage at the El Venadito (Deer) monument.

With the object of avoiding pedestrian and vehicle gridlock in the Zona Dorada during Semana Santa, the Mazatlán municipality and the municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art have created a designated area for music located in Olas Altas and dubbed the “Bandódromo.”
Beginning tonight through Saturday, the area is open to the public free of charge from 7pm to 4am offering a variety of entertainment including dance, music and surprise events sponsored by Grupo Modelo and the municipality.
Four stages have been set up in Olas Altas for musical groups ranging from rock, salsa, pop and banda. At the intersection of Olas Altas and Constitución, Grupo Fussion Teens will perform. La Rezaka will take the stage at the Ferrusquilla monument while Banda Juventud Sinaloense and Notas Latinas will play at Olas Altas and Sixto Osuna. Rounding out the musical genres are Banda Crucero and Grupo Sihuey on stage at the El Venadito (Deer) monument.
On Saturday, visitors at the Bandódromo will also be treated to a fireworks display.
Gates to the Bandódromo will open at 7pm and music will continue until 2am the following morning. Beer sales within the area are restricted to retail shops, restaurants and stores located in Olas Altas.
On the other side of Mazatlán, in the north end, a series of popular DJs will provide music at the Sunset Paradise fiesta beginning today through April 19 from 2pm to 10pm.
The fiesta is located at Condominios Puenta Arena past the second La Marina bridge beside the 360 Degree condominium tower. DJs Cheke from Culiacán, Irak Soria from Playa del Carmen and DJ and Playmate International Sexy Devil will provide the music.
Gaddiel Hernández, event organizer, said he expects 6,000 fans to attend the beach party daily. This is the fourth year the event has been held in Mazatlán.

Mayor to Monitor Alcohol Consumption during Semana Santa

Authorities will be hard on both tourists and locals who parade up and down the city’s streets consuming alcohol.
Authorities will be hard on both tourists and locals who parade up and down the city’s streets consuming alcohol.
Mazatlán mayor, Carlos Felton, said that the city will closely control the public consumption of alcohol during the Easter holiday. He said, “I do not want Mazatlán to become a public cantina.”
The mayor said the city will be hard on both tourists and locals who parade up and down the city’s streets consuming alcohol.
Carlos Felton also said that hours of operation will be monitored; closing those establishments that fail to strictly comply with hours of operations, noting that the Golden Zone is the area of most concern.
He said that this week he would be meeting with the Ministry of Public Security to review their plans for strict enforcement.
In a further effort to contain the thousands of tourists and locals partying at night on the streets of Mazatlán during Semana Santa, local businesses have proposed establishing a dedicated space for entertainment where authorities will have improved crowd control.
The proposal is to introduce the first edition of the “Bandódromo,” a pedestrian walkway where local bands and regional musicians would play for the partiers.
As of this time, the planners are looking at two options for the Bandódromo location. The first is Av. Del Mar between Av. Insurgentes and Av. Rafael Buelna. The second option is Olas Altas.
The first option, as well as sales of alcohol and informal commerce, were discussed at a two hour closed door meeting yesterday between Municipal authorities and Canaco business representatives.
Head of Canaco, Miguel Hernández Fonseca, told reporters following the meeting that they definitely decided not to close streets during Semana Santa and that they wanted to eliminate risks and the poor image Mazatlán projects when people are drinking in the streets, urinating in public and impeding traffic in an illegal manner.
The plan is for the Bandódromo to open at 8pm, closing at 2am or 3am the following morning during the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Semana Santa, days when the city sees the greatest number of tourists and locals on the beach and in recreational areas.

Mexico to benefit from ITB

THE NEWS
The 2014 ITB Berlin International Tourism Fair — where Mexico was featured as this year’s partner country — brought together a record number of 10,147 exhibitors from 189 countries.
According to Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) sources, Mexico’s performance as the ITB Berlin partner country for this year was “stunning,” thanks to a program of entertainment and multimedia spectacles that it said allowed Mexico to show off its cultural treasures.
The Mexico Pavilion included music and dance spectacles, as well as traditional Mexican dishes that showed off the country’s culinary heritage.
Sectur sources said that visitors “could go to Mexico and take their experiences home with them” through a virtual visit, adding that the colorful handicrafts from around the country that were on display provoked interest among many visitors to visit Mexico.
“Mexico shares its happiness and satisfaction regarding the results of the ITB 2014, and the fair represented a great opportunity to show off our country and its destinations,” Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu said in an official statement. “We were able to show a sophisticated, modern and diverse Mexico to the world, boasting of our numerous cultural and natural attractions and a wealth of food and handicrafts.”

Carnaval 2014 Draws to a Close

The Municipal Cultural Institute reported that Carnaval earned approximately 450 million pesos for the city.
The Municipal Cultural Institute reported that Carnaval earned approximately 450 million pesos for the city.

Mazatlán’s Carnaval 2014 drew to a close yesterday with the lightly attended second parade along the picturesque Malecón. In stark contrast to the first parade held last Sunday, attendance to watch the second was 30 percent less, said the office of the Official Mayor.

The popular highlight of this year’s Carnaval was the performance by the internationally acclaimed Banda El Recodo in Olas Altas on March 3rd where 25,000 fans paid to enjoy the music, though unofficially police estimated 80,000 people packed Olas Altas to watch the two and a half hour show.

Municipal police reported 329 detentions during the five day party and 22 vehicle accidents resulting in 21 injuries. None of the accidents occurred in Carnaval event areas, stated Police Chief Aarón Aguilar Íñiguez, and only two people were arrested for drunk driving.

However, in the early hours of Tuesday morning after the El Recodo performance and as the crowd gathered in Plazuela Machado to continue partying, an argument broke out between two young men in front of the La Coronita bar. One of the men left to return a few minutes later with a gun and began shooting at his rival who was accompanied by friends.

During the incident, 30-year-old Mazatlecan Azucena Pacheo was shot dead and Gabriela Zataráin Wong was injured. The assailant ran into the fleeing crowd searching for his rival Juan Carlos Wong whom he shot and injured. Police immediately apprehended the shooter who was carrying a .9 millimeter handgun and took him into custody.

Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton told reporters this was an isolated incident and would not detract from the success of Carnaval 2014 with the theme “Litoralia, la piel del mar.”

And finally, the Municipal Cultural Institute reported that Carnaval earned approximately 450 million pesos for the city.
