Representatives of Blue Life, operators the Acuario Inbursa in Mexico City, met with municipal authorities to reiterate their interest in Mazatlán, and in particular in obtaining the concession to operate Mazatlán´s aquarium.

Several months ago, the municipal council approved reforms to the decree creating the aquarium but those reforms have been legally challenged and are presently under an amparo.

Following the meeting, Secretary of the Municipality María del Rosario Torres Noriega told media the municipality is interested in obtaining a concession for the aquarium but denied the proposal has been decided or that it will land in the hands of Acuario Inbursa.

Although it will not be ready for Semana Santa holidays, work on the Carpa Olivera saltwater swimming pool in Olas Altas has advanced approximately 60 percent, says the municipality.

The goal of the revitalization project is to rescue the pool which due to neglect fell into disrepair and became dangerous for swimmers.

The saltwater pool was popular especially during summer months.

Personnel from the municipal public works department are presently working on the construction of a water slide, water discharge pipes, a cistern to hold water for an interactive fountain, an access ramp and public bathrooms.

Structural elements are now finished, the municipal press release stated, and work will begin shortly on the flooring.

Work has been interrupted or slowed occasionally due to high seas washing over the retaining walls, but it is expected the tides will soon recede and work can continue without delay.

Yet to done is the installation of benches, painting of walls, installation of electrical wiring, lamps, “intelligent” fountains and construction of a storage shed.

The municipality has invested 4,645,918 pesos in remodeling the once popular swimming pool. Work on the project is expected to be completed in the first two weeks of May.

Aquarium Plans new Penguin Habitat and Dolphin Pool

Jorge del Rincón Jerero, director of Mazatlán’s aquarium, said on Wednesday that the growth of the aquarium should not stop if they wish to continue to be an important tourist attraction in the port.
In the case of the incomplete shark tank begun four years ago, he advised the search for funds continues and should be available next year.
What he wants to do in 2015, he told reporters, is renew the aquarium with new shows, upgrade the 34 year old building, install a penguin habitat where the botanical gardens are presently located and build a dolphin pool.
He estimated that by the end of December, 330,000 people will have visited the aquarium this year.

Mayor Wants a Central Park and Cable Car for Mazatlán

The project would include erecting a cable car line from the El Faro tourist lookout.
The project would include erecting a cable car line from the El Faro tourist lookout.
A central park and cable car on El Faro are two projects Mayor Carlos Felton discussed with the federal Secretary of Tourism with the view to obtaining federal resources to execute the projects.
Following a visit with the authority in Mexico City earlier this week, the Mayor stated during the meeting they talked about plans for a central park on Bosque de la Ciudad land and the construction of a cable car from the El Faro tourist lookout.
The Mayor said his administration wants to transform Mazatlán, they want to make a central park in Bosque de la Ciudad where there will be a museum, a bigger aquarium and where there will be space for people to enjoy the open air.
They are also proposing to regenerate El Faro with a cable car, though the Mayor did not give any further specifics.
With respect to the central park, the Mayor expects the investment to be around 2,700,000 pesos for the museum, aquarium, a botanical park, an aviary and an area for marine birds.
The park will be 100 percent ecologically sustainable with bridges to connect it to the Malecón, said Felton, adding the ambitious project will transform Mazatlán´s tourist image and will make a difference when tourists are deciding where to spend their vacation.

Free Mexican Navy Display Attracts Thousands of Visitors

The Secretariat of the Mexican Navy has brought its itinerant exposition of naval combat equipment to Mazatlán in commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the Gesta Heroica del Puerto de Veracruz in April, 1914 when Mexicans left to defend their country against an invasion by the United States.
The impressive display attracted over 10,000 curious Mazatlecans last weekend, breaking a record for attendance. The free exposition is located at the docks by La Puntilla and is open from 10am to 8:30pm until June 30th when it will leave port.
Also in port this week is the Mexican rapid attack frigate “Nicolás Bravo” which arrived on Friday from its home base in Manzanillo on a courtesy visit and is presently tied up at the API docks.
The “Bravo” is a part of the Mexican national defense system carrying anti-aircraft and anti-submarine armament. It is named in honour of former Mexican President Nicolás Bravo.

World’s largest artificial reef is being built in Mexico

geogarage.com
From MexicoNewsNetwork
Thursday, June 12, 2014

A team of expert engineers, environmentalists, architects and specialized divers embarked upon the greatest adventure of their lives and took on their hands a once-in-a-lifetime challenge:
Building the world’s largest artificial reef.

The purpose?

Diverting the attention and negative impact of time on the natural ecosystem, and fight against climate changes to preserve the Mexican Caribbean’s splendor, by regenerating the marine ecosystem with an enormous labor.

Kan-Kanán is an environmental project never-seen before!
It means to turn into the new habitat of thousands of sea species, and will protect the coast from natural erosion.

Consisting of a mega project, we currently stand before a fascinatingly interesting solution to a strong problem: the deterioration of marine systems, product of climate changes.

Construction of the World’s largest artificial reef (view from crane)

This monumental artificial reef will be built using over 1,000 hollow pyramidal structures created on a concrete and micro silica base.

Each one of them approximately weighs ten tons, and must be placed with extreme precision over the seabed by very powerful cranes and a team of specialized divers.

Its materials and structure make it an environmentally friendly construction that allows nutrients to attach, resulting in the regeneration of marine life.

Longer than the Brooklyn Bridge, The Guardian of the Caribbean will cover a 1.9-kilometer area parallel to the coast of Punta Brava.

From above, this monumental reef looks like a huge serpent guarding the coast, giving birth to its name: Kan-Kanán, which means “The Guarding Serpent” in Mayan.

International organisms and environmentalists originally proposed this new solution, which is in fact built against time.

It’s a well-known fact that the Caribbean features certain limitations: tropical and versatile weather conditions, the coast’s unstable terrain, the unpredictable ocean, and hurricane season approaching (June – November)…

These are merely a few elements that converge in one place and make this project an even more interesting and huge challenge!

The project takes place in one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet: The Caribbean.

 South of Cancun, Mexico

The construction site, located in Puerto Morelos in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, is home to over 13,450 marine species, and stands just in front of the world’s second natural coral barrier.

In one of the most exotic sceneries in the globe, the effort of more than one hundred people is focused on regenerating one of our most valuable treasures.

Aquarium Shark Tank Ready Next Week

The new shark tank in the Mazatlán aquarium should be ready to install its new inhabitants next week, said aquarium director Jorge del Rincón Jarero.
Although the tank appeared to be completed last year and he expected to have it ready for viewing by Semana Santa this year, the director said the appearance of cracks in the glass forced them to postpone until repairs and painting were completed.
The number of sharks to be installed in the tank has not yet been decided, he added.

Pino Suarez Celebrates its 115th Anniversary

Pino Suarez will be celebrating its 155th anniversary today. When the Mercado Municipal opened in 1899 its name was “Manuel Romero Rubio.” It was so named in honor of the then Minister of Government and father of President Porfirio Díaz.
However its name was changed to its current one on February 14, 1915. The current name is in honor of José María Pino Suárez, the vice president of México in 1913 when he was killed along with President Francisco I. Madero.
The Mercado has had a rocky history, but current plans call for a major remodel and updating of the facility. The final plans are said to be about 90% complete and that construction could begin within the next couple of months.
Fernando Izquierdo Canizales, head of the tenants association, said that in celebration of the market’s anniversary music and dance will be provided to customers between 10:00 am and noon today.
He added that the corner of Melchor Ocampo and Aquiles Serdan would be closed to accommodate the festivities
