Maztatlán’s Instituto Municipal de la Juventud (institute of youth or Imju) under the Responsible Scholarship Program (Probere), provided 700 students of Fraccionamiento Las Mañanitas with a monthly stipend to assist with school expenses yesterday.

Of the 700, 350 went to secondary school students and 350 to those attending high school. The younger students each received 300 pesos monthly and those in high school 400 pesos each month.

The municipality has already spent two million of the 5,600,000 pesos budgeted for the scholarships, said Imju director Reynaldo González Meza.

The Probere scholarships are for students with minimal financial resources and have been given out mainly to students in El Quelite, El Habal, Siqueros, El Roble, La Noria and colonias in Mazatlán among others.

Federal Gov’t Offers Scholarships to Study English in USA

The federal government will give away 40 scholarships to Mazatlán university students to study or improve their English language skills in the United States.
Federal deputy Martín Heredia Lizárraga said the 65,000 pesos scholarships will be donated to the Universidad Politécnica de Sinaloa, Universidad de Occidente, Instituto Tecnológico de Mazatlán and possibly the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa.
The scholarships include obtaining student visas, housing and certification in English proficiency. The universities and institutes, said the deputy, will decide which students will most benefit from the federal offer.
The lucky students will leave for the United States next month. (from Noroeste)

Mexico gives scholarships to students in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships were handed out Tuesday in San Diego and it’s not tax-payer money, nor is it private money.

Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto gave out $45,000 in scholarships to 160 students of Mexican descent living in San Diego, who are in tough spot.

Alejandra Garcia was brought to the U.S. illegally by her family when she was a young girl.  When she turned 18 years old, her family decided to go back to Mexico – she stayed behind to finish school.

Garcia’s undocumented status makes scholarship options slim to none, so her share of the scholarship money, about $600, will be put to good use.

“My books for my last semester,” said the Southwestern College sophomore.

The scholarship money will also help some of San Diego’s adult education programs that help people like Francisca Hernandez Nuñez, a 47-year-old mother of four who cleans houses for a living in Vista and recently graduated from the sixth grade.

“I am now learning in English,” Nuñez added.

The scholarship program, IME Becas, has been around for 5 years and has made over $5 million in scholarships available to 34,000 students across the United States.
