Pérez: Mexico will surprise Formula 1

gpupdate.net

McLaren driver Sergio Pérez says the Formula 1 fraternity will be "amazed" by the popularity of the Mexican Grand Prix, should it be cleared to return next season.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, which hosted the sport from 1963-1970 and 1986-1992, is on the 21-race draft calendar issued ahead of this weekend’s Monza event, although its place is subject to circuit and contractual obligations being met.

If the race goes ahead, Pérez has backed his nation to be a hugely positive addition.
"I'm very happy, very excited," said Pérez. "It's not confirmed yet, but I see a very big chance of this happening. It will be great for my country, great for the sport and Formula 1 will be amazed at how popular this Grand Prix can become after just a single race.

"People always talk about bad Mexico is, so I think it's a real opportunity for us to show the world how good we are as a country. The infrastructure [in Mexico City] is amazing; there are a lot of people so I think in terms of a package it is the best place where you can have a race."

Pérez, contesting his third Formula 1 campaign, is also confident that the required changes to the track layout and associated buildings can be completed in time.

"They need to rebuild it, but there is enough time – a couple of months of flat-out work," he added. "I think that's why it's so important for our country to start working on it and get the final contract. I think they have to change the pits for Formula 1, and a few corners maybe. Apart from that I don't think they have to do big things to be ready.

"Of course they have room to improve. I think the standard will raise for Formula 1."
