Mexican wins third Derby

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Víctor Espinoza is getting pretty good at winning the Kentucky Derby.
The jockey who calls himself the “the luckiest Mexican on Earth” won his second straight Derby and third overall Saturday, guiding favorite American Pharoah to a one-length victory over Firing Line before a record crowd of 170,513 at Churchill Downs.

Espinoza won last year’s Derby aboard another favorite, California Chrome, and with War Emblem in 2002. Two of his wins came for trainer Bob Baffert, with American Pharoah and War Emblem.

The 42-year-old became the seventh jockey to win three Derbies and the sixth to win in back-to-back years — Calvin Borel being the most recent with Super Saver in 2010 and Mine That Bird in 2009.
 

“There’s been a lot of great trainers that haven’t been able to win it because they just didn’t have the horse, but every great jockey wins the Kentucky Derby,” Baffert said in praising his jockey.

American Pharoah was the 3-1 favorite in the 18-horse field. After winning last year’s race, Espinoza said Baffert congratulated him with this message: “You and I, next year.”

“What were the odds?” Espinoza asked Saturday. “We were just joking around.”

Espinoza, among the nation’s leading riders, describes himself as nervous and hyper, yet was calm throughout the week. Even his wife said he seemed unexpectedly relaxed.

It’s understandable why Espinoza felt strongly entering the Derby: American Pharoah had won four straight stakes races by 22 1/4 lengths combined.
 

“It’s all about confidence,” he said. “I went into this race with so much confidence in American Pharoah. The way he was running, the way he was winning.”

American Pharoah cruised to a dominating eight-length win in the Arkansas Derby on April 11 that made him the horse to beat.

The horse and Espinoza now prepare for the trip to Baltimore in two weeks for the Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Just before the race, the wife of American Pharoah owner Ahmed Zayat promised she’d make Espinoza dinner if he won.

After he held up his end, she told the crowd at the post-race news conference, “I owe you dinner.”
Espinoza answered, “I hope you know how to make Mexican food.””

The public in Mexico won’t have to worry about dropped almost $100 to watch the Fight of the Century between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Because it will be aired by two TV stations, Televisa and Azteca, completely free of charge.

From CBS Sports:

“Televisa and Azteca must be recognized for their great commitment, for bringing to Mexico this bout for free,” the World Boxing Council told TMZ. “This has never, ever happened in any country of the world.”

Of course, Mexico is heavily invested in the fight. The Mexican Tourism Board is sponsoring the fight and the official beer of the fight is Tecate, which is based out of Monterrey, Mexico. The two sponsors helped the Fight of the Century bring in a record $13.2 million in sponsorship money.

And, even though an entire country won’t have to purchase pay-per-view to see the fight, the sales generated via PPV should smash yet another record.

Mazatlán’s Female American Football Team Champions Again

Mazatlán’s all female American football team, the Halconas, won the championship of the Liga de Futbol Americano Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango for the second year in a row beating out the Aztecas of Durango at the municipal football field in Villas del Rey with a score of 20-12. This was the second year the Halconas had faced the Aztecas for the championship and won.

Mazatlán Boxer Takes on Filipino Contender

WBC World Champion, Mazatlecan Pedro Guevara, will meet Filipino contender Richard Claveras at the Centro de Usos Multiples tomorrow night at 5pm in a 12-round match where Guevara will defend his light flyweight title.

Eight other matches are programmed, including a bout between Jéssica “La Kika” Chávez and Filipina Norja Guro in a 10-round flyweight bout.

Tickets can be purchased at the baseball stadium and the Centro de Usos Multiples.

New Baseball Stadium for Mazatlán Still in Limbo

Last week media reported that Érick Arellano will become president of Mazatlán’s new Liga Mexicana de Beisbol baseball team to be called Club Marineros which will play during the summer months beginning 2016. At the time of the announcement, Arellano stated his club is interested in participating in the construction of a new baseball stadium in the port.

Asked by reporters about the new stadium yesterday, Governor Mario Lòpez Valdez said there have been no advances in construction.

What we have now, said the Governor, is a completed executive project and a proposal by a local group of businessmen for its possible construction. The project is viable, he said, but with the sale of Grupo Modelo who were to be in charge of the new stadium, the project has come to a standstill.

Mexico, Germany to host NFL games? League explores markets

A potential return to Los Angeles dominated the headlines leading into the NFL Annual Meeting earlier this week. Inside the room, owners were apprised that the league is being just as aggressive beyond the borders of its home country.

The NFL's efforts in London are still at the forefront, to be sure, but are only part of the equation now as the league is moving to broaden its efforts internationally. As the league sees it, the next group of countries to zero in on are Mexico, Canada and China, and it won't stop there.

"The work we're doing now is to ask, 'How do we accelerate the agenda in Mexico, Canada and China?'" said Mark Waller, NFL EVP, International. "Those would be our next stage, and we have offices in those three countries. And then, after those, where should be our focus? I think we've concluded that Brazil and Germany are the next two frontier markets, which is where the Pro Bowl idea comes from."

The league has, indeed, considered moving the February 2017 Pro Bowl to Brazil, in an effort to introduce the game and its stars to the world's fifth-largest populace. Germany, on the other hand, is developed as a football-watching public well beyond needing that, and will soon be in consideration for a regular-season game.

With that in mind, here's a look at where things stand following the owner' meetings ...
  

» Asked if the NFL remains on track to reach its goal of having a team full-time in London by 2022, Waller responded, "Absolutely." Had it not been for the Rugby World Cup, the league would've gone to four games in London this year, so it's a good bet that happens in 2016. Also, the NFL has a base of 40,000 fans who bought tickets for all three games for this year. The vast majority of those 40,000 are local to London, and bought tickets for all three games last year, which, in the league's eyes, represents the formation of a potential season-ticket base.

» The NFL sent a team to Mexico City two weeks ago to visit stadiums in the area, and left knowing that work still needed to be done. But the league is now starting to look at expanding the International Series to include regular-season games outside the U.K., with 2017 being a target, and Mexico and Germany are the focus of those efforts. In Germany, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf are the likeliest sites, with Berlin and Munich also under consideration.

» Additionally, the league is starting to look at options to bring some form of preseason football to Mexico in the short term -- it could be a team having a part of training camp there, it could be a set of scrimmages.

» The overriding issue in Germany (which had five of six NFL Europe teams, and has produced NFL players) remains television distribution. The league has been able to get its playoff games and the Super Bowl on the air, but has struggled to find a carrier for the regular season.

» Development in Canada remains steady. Meanwhile, the focus in China is on media rights, particularly digitally, with the league looking to distribute its product online.

The easiest way to look at this -- the NFL is comfortable enough with its growth in the U.K. to start similar projects elsewhere.

All three games in London have sold out, and part of the logistical problem there has been mitigated too with two resolutions passed in October that will help facilitate the growth to more than three games over the next few years.

The first one stipulates that if teams are relocating -- and one or two very well may be in 2016 -- they have to give up a home game in each of their transitional years, the seasons between the move being announced and a new stadium opening. The second says that teams that win a Super Bowl bid have to give up a home game within a five-year period.

Both should help keep the well of teams going to London (or elsewhere) from running dry, and allow continued growth as the league works toward a permanent franchise in the U.K. And of course, the International Series has moved to a phase that will test how a full-time franchise there would work, with the introduction of back-to-back games and a division game this year, and the possible addition of a December game and removal of the automatic byes afforded to traveling teams soon.

"We're testing it from a fan standpoint, from a stadium standpoint," said Waller. "Will the field stand up? We've had issues there, so this year will be big playing the games back-to-back. The rest of the work is internal, on what to do next. We're thinking through the next steps."

And clearly, all of those steps are being taken forward.

Mazatlán Surf Open this Weekend

The Campeonato Mazatlán Surf Open begins this Friday at Playa Bruja where approximately 50 surfers will vie for the 65,000 pesos purse.

National surfers such as Angelo Lozano, Diego Cadena and Dylan Southworth will arrive in port to demonstrate their talent in the event organized by the altruistic Surfers with Cause group headed by Gabriel Ocampo.

The competition begins on Friday at 10am at Playa Bruja in Cerritos and ends on Sunday. Entrance to the beach is free and open to the public.

Mazatlan to host tournament on PGA TOUR Latin America

MAZATLAN, Mexico -- Mazatlan, Mexico's "Colonial City on the Beach," will host the Mazatlan Open, one of four PGA TOUR Latinoamerica tournament stops in Mexico. Abraham Levy is certainly not the first person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, but he is the first to make the voyage between Spain and Mexico.

The 34-year-old Mexican arrived at 1:00pm today in Cancún after leaving Puerto de Palos in Spain on October 21 aboard the Cascarita, an ocean-going rowboat 6.7 meters long and 1.8 wide.

 

The purpose of Levy’s 9,000-kilometer trip was to raise awareness of the importance of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Mayan Reef, which extends from the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula all the way down to Honduras.

Upon his arrival today he admitted there were many difficult and dark days, but expressed his appreciation “for the generosity of the sea that brought me to Mexico . . . .”

During a press conference he offered details of the expedition, during which he had contact with no one. During Christmas week it rained five days straight with winds of 50 knots, or 90 km/h, said the adventurer.

“When you’re in the middle of the ocean all you can do is trust that the work you have done was done well.”

Levy took five years to prepare for the journey, which included selling his telephone business, he told the news agency EFE before leaving. The boat was equipped with the latest in communications, navigation and security equipment, and was loaded with 700 kilos of food when he left Spain.
A part of the sponsorship earned by the voyage will be donated to The Nature Conservancy, said Levy.

Another of his goals was to inform Mexicans over the importance of the oceans and “of our own strength to turn into reality those things that seem impossible.”

Levy was welcomed at a marina in Cancún this afternoon by state Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo, the chairman of the board of the expedition’s principal sponsor, Invex Banco, and about 200 well-wishers.

Levy made history in 2008 when he became the first person to travel the entire coast of Mexico by kayak.

“Gotcha” Aficionados Gather in Mazatlán for Weekend Games

Over 1,000 Gotcha competitors from around Mexico are gathering in Mazatlán this weekend for games organized by Militaría under the banner “Rescate del Infierno” (rescue from fire).

At a press conference, organizers said they expect to exceed last year’s competition entitled “Stone Island: El desembarco” in terms of participants and missions.

Approximately 1,000 competitors and companions and two Robinson R44 helicopters are programmed to take part in “Rescate del Infierno” where two rival teams will battle each other in complicated missions. Once an hour each team will be given a mission they must complete within a time limit to earn points.

The encounter is programed for March 14 and 15 at the Campo MasterGotcha located beside the motocross track in the Zona Dorada.

Mexico Triumphs in Gran Pacífico Triathlon 2015

Mexico dominated the winners’ stands at the 14th edition of the Gran Pacífico Triathlon on Sunday in the Elite division.

Media published only the winners of the Elite competition this year although 1,000 athletes took part in several categories. In both the female and male Elite competitions the first, second and third places were all won by Mexican athletes. Rodrígo González recorded the winning time of 1:53:48 and Andrea Díaz won the ladies with a time of 2:09:08.

When speaking to reporters, Ismael Barros, director of the event, addressed rumours that the Sinaloa government had reduced its budget for the triathlon saying the event would continue next year although with “possible” significant changes.

He expects important changes for next year, he said, including a possible change in date and the former sponsor Grupo Modelo no longer taking a direct administrative role.

Sports enthusiasts in Sabalo Country and surrounding fraccionamientos now have a decent soccer field for their games.

Students from the Instituto Británico, the Mazatlán Mayor and other functionaries inaugurated the playing field located across from the Instituto yesterday.

The soccer field is state of the art with artificial grass, fences, players´ benches, spectator stands and lighting.

According to the municipal public works department, it was built at a cost of 2,117,000 pesos.

The municpality also spent money on fences, players´ benches, spectator stands and lighting.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Carlos Felton said his government is working to rehabilitate and create more sports complexes in every area of the municipality, without distinction.

There are approximately 700 inhabitants of fraccionamiento Sabalo Country located just north of the Golden Zone.

Pedro Guevara Plans First WBC Defense in Mazatlan

WBC light flyweight Champion Pedro Guevara (24-1-1, 16KOs) is ready to defend his title in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, for the first time, in March or April. Pedro is still awaiting word of an opponent from his promoter, Promociones del Pueblo. He says there is a tentative date of March 21st, but he's yet to be informed if the date is finalized.

"We are about to go to the Otomi Ceremony Center to train. We are just waiting for the date. I still don’t have an opponent, but I know that the bout will be in Mazatlan, and that motivates me a lot. It's a dream for me to defend my title for the first time at home."

"Pedrinho" is running on Mazatlan Pier before dawn and in afternoon he trains at a local gym. And next it's destination Otomi.

Blessed with brains to match his brawn, Pedro will soon graduate as a lawyer from the  UAS in Mazatlan.

Guevara nipped into his University to address some graduation matters. He also took the opportunity to offer a motivational speech in the classroom where he once pored over books.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – San Diego Padres utilityman Alexi Amarista hit a two-run triple to lead Venezuela to a 5-2 victory over host Puerto Rico and Mexico beat Cuba 2-1 Monday in the opening games of the Caribbean Series.

Cincinnati Reds prospect Daryl Thompson gave up a run in six innings and struck out five for the Venezuelan team, Los Caribes de Anzoategui.

Cleveland Indians minor leaguer Giovanni Soto got the loss for the Puerto Rican team, Los Cangrejeros de Santurce.

San Francisco Giants infielder Ehire Adrianza had an RBI single for Venezuela a batter before Amarista got his hit off Soto in the third inning.

Earlier Monday, Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguer Walter Ibarra hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning for Mexico’s Los Tomateros de Culiacan in a win over the Cuban national
champion Vegueros de Pinar del Rio.

Cuban starter Freddy Asiel Alvarez allowed only two hits in the first five innings but Mexico scored in the sixth and seventh for the win.

On Tuesday, Cuba plays the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico faces Mexico in the night game.

Hosting the Formula One Grand Prix in Mexico City will generate an economic impact of $2 billion USD over a five-year period, Mexico tourism officials say.

The race returns to the Hermanos Rodríguez circuit this year for the first time since 1992. British pilot Nigel Mansell won Mexico’s last F1 race back in that year, while on his way to winning the World Drivers’ Championship, but the sport has not returned to our country ever since.

Undersecretary of quality and regulation at the ministry of tourism, Francisco Mass Pena, said the race will create 18,000 jobs and will directly contribute 60% occupancy of the city’s hotel room stock.

“Over the three-day event, some 520 million television viewers will watch the race and see Mexico in the process,” he said.

The head of Mexico racing team Telmex, Carlos Slim Domit, said 250,000 spectators are expected over race weekend with at least 100,000 watching the race itself on November 1.

It will also be the first race on home soil for highly rated Mexican driver Sergio Perez who gained a top-10 finish in last season’s standings.
