Government Announces Support for Shrimp Farmers

In a meeting with Enrique Martinez y Martinez, Secretary of Agriculture, aquaculture producers related the problems the industry was having. They said that due to white spot syndrome and hurricanes last year over 40,000 tons of shrimp were lost, having a value of three billion pesos ($22 million).

The producers pointed out that the loss of 70-75 percent of the shrimp production in Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Sonora resulted in a bleak future for the industry.

Enrique Martinez said that the government would help the aquaculture producers by granting them 600 million pesos for the acquisition and handling of larvae needed for stocking their ponds. Initially the government will give the producers in Sinaloa 90 million pesos ($6.85 million), the famers in Sonora 45.3 million pesos ($3.45 million), and 8.2 million pesos ($625 thousand) to the Nayarit producers.

He encouraged the producer to promote the consumption of shrimp in the country, noting that global per capita consumption of shrimp is 19 kilos (42 lbs.), while it is only 9 kilos (20 lbs.) in México.

First research cruise started in Mexican Pacific deep waters

With 22 researchers on board, the Ship of Oceanographic and Fisheries Research of the National Fisheries Institute (BIPO-INAPESCA) started its first cruise to carry out studies in deep waters of the Mexican Pacific Ocean.

The ship, whose operational base is in the port of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, left for the Gulf of California, where biological studies of fisheries acoustics, exploratory fisheries, physical oceanography, chemistry and biological will be conducted.

Through the fisheries acoustics and control fishing operations, researchers will determine abundance and spatio-temporal variation indexes of species that are susceptible for commercial exploitation. Furthermore, the appropriate capture technology will be defined for the capture of the identified resources.

In this first stage of the research planned by INAPESCA a survey phase is considered, which is consistent with the performance of fisheries exploration cruises through fisheries acoustics for verifying and determining the existence of resources to lay the foundation to promote the development of new sustainable commercial fisheries. This is carried out in the water column as well as at or near the seafloor.

To carry out this research, the research vessel has cutting-edge technology for data collection. It also has a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can go down up to two thousand metres deep for sampling, taking photos and making high resolution videos for scientific documentaries.

The researchers who are part of the scientific group in these early research vessels belong to the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine Sciences of the National Polytechnic Institute (CICIMAR), Centre for Biological Research of the Northwest (CIBNOR), Centre for Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE), Autonomous University of Baja California, Sonora University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Navy Secretariat, among other institutions.

Harvest of Shrimp Farms Begins

A spokesperson for the Cooperative Patole Fish Production said that the harvest of shrimp began 5:00 am Wednesday morning when 20 boats, each with two men on board, left the docks. Around 8:30 am the boats returned with an average of 200 kilos of shrimp each. The average weight of the shrimp was 14 ounces.

José Natividad Torres Salazar, president of the cooperative, said it was a very good start to the season, both in quantity and size. He attributed the good harvest to the lunar cycle. José Natividad Torres said they expect to harvest 100 tons of shrimp in the next two months.

A total of 20,000 larvae were seeded in stages from March through May.

Research Ship Handed Over to Mexico’s Fisheries Institute

The Armón Vigo shipyard has delivered to the Mexico’s National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) a fishing and oceanographic research ship.

The vessel was commissioned to explore the waters of Mexico’s Pacific coast, and according to an official press release from the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA in its Spanish acronym), “hopefully its work will make it possible to start fishing new species of commercial interest that live at depths of up to 2,000 m in the exclusive economic zone.”


Based in the Port of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa, the ship will operate in its first phase in the northern Pacific coast where there are signs of the presence of black cod, crabs, shrimp and deep sea squid.
SENER supervised the engineering project for the ship, carried out its building inspection and provided INAPESCA with technical assistance for all matters related to the project and the construction of the ship.

Among the main characteristics of the oceanographic vessel – which will have to spend extended periods on the high seas – are the 59 m length and its capacity to carry up to 20 scientific researchers and staff, in addition to the crew.

The ship has seven geological/hydro-acoustic laboratories for biological/fishing research and a meteorology station, together with holds with freezer tunnels for storing and preserving species.

It is equipped with the latest technology for locating and evaluating fishing resources in depths greater than 1,000 m. It can reach a speed of 13 knots and can remain at sea autonomously for 40 days. Furthermore, the vessel has dynamic positioning system.

Arriba hoy Peña Nieto a Mazatlán

Esta sería la tercera ocasión que Peña Nieto visita Mazatlán como Presidente de México

De forma previa a su visita oficial en Mazatlán, el Presidente de la República, Enrique Peña Nieto, arribará hoy a esta ciudad a las 18:30 horas y será recibido por el Alcalde Carlos Felton González en el aeropuerto Rafael Buelna Tenorio, esto según la agenda oficial del Ayuntamiento. 

Trascendió que, después de cumplir una agenda de trabajo en el sur de Sonora, el Mandatario dormirá en un hotel de la zona de Cerritos. 

Para mañana miércoles, el Presidente tiene programada una visita a los muelles locales para abanderar el Buque de Investigación Pesquera y Oceanográfica, en el cual se invirtieron más de 410 millones de pesos y se dedicará a la exploración de aguas profundas para detectar nuevas especies, susceptibles de explotación pesquera. 

En el mismo día, la agenda incluye un recorrido por la planta de tratamiento El Crestón, junto al faro, aunque no se han dado a conocer más detalles del itinerario. 

Pedirán rebaja al diesel marino 
En el marco de la visita, productores pesqueros gestionan un acercamiento con el titular del Ejecutivo federal para plantearle la problemática del diesel marino, ya que los constantes aumentos en el precio del energético mantienen a la pesca en situación crítica. 

El líder de la Unión de Armadores, Ricardo Michel Luna, adelantó que él sería parte de una pequeña comitiva que hablará con el Presidente, al igual que Armando Castro Real, presidente de la Confederación Nacional Cooperativa Pesquera, y Fernando Medrano Freeman, dirigente de la Canainpesca. 

"El asunto de los energéticos es lo que nos urge plantearle al Presidente, vamos a buscar un espacio dentro de su agenda para platicar con él, aunque no está confirmado", manifestó Michel. 

Esta sería la tercera ocasión que Peña Nieto visita Mazatlán como Presidente de México.

Mexico and Argentina strengthen their agricultural cooperation and trade

Enrique Martinez y Martinez, head of SAGARPA, and Carlos Casamiquela, Argentina's Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, held a meeting to strengthen the scientific and technical cooperation, as well as the agro-food trade, between both countries.

Martinez exposed Mexico's interest in developing joint projects in priority areas.

Mexico has significant business opportunities with Argentina, as it has tariff preferences for agricultural products, such as vegetables, and other products.

Mexico is Argentina's ninth biggest food exporter and, as such, it should exploit its commercial potential.

This meeting took place given the upcoming V Meeting of the Joint Committee on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between both countries, which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
