Jumapam Notifies of Water Shutoff in El Centro beginning Today

In a press release yesterday, Mazatlán’s water department (Jumapam) advised that due to the repositioning of drainage pipes in Mar Jónico Street in Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas, water service will be suspended from 8am to 4pm in the southern part of El Centro.

The cutoff will affect residents of Calle Constitución to Calle Miguel Alemán, including those in Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas and Playa Sur.

Interruption in service may occur in subsequent days but should only affect residents of Lázaro Cárdenas. Work will begin tomorrow and last approximately two weeks.

Multi-Story Car Park Planned for El Centro

Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton announced yesterday that last weekend he met with the Lizárraga family, owners of land that is presently being used as a parking lot between Carnaval and Ángel Flores streets in El Centro.

He has suggested the parking lot be built up three or four stories, or what is permitted by INAH, to accommodate 250 vehicles to help alleviate chronic parking problems in the El Centro district.
The family has shown interest in the idea and met with the investment committee of the municipality yesterday, the Mayor said.

In tandem with a multi-story parking lot, Felton said they are considering a project to close off streets for pedestrian walkways to give the Centro Histórico a new face as has been done in the city of Durango.

A study has begun to ascertain which streets can be closed without affecting vehicle traffic. The Mayor added that in Durango pedestrian walkways resulted in a 30 to 35 percent increase in sales.
He also told media his administration is working on a project to build a Museum of Music on land beside the Angela Peralta Theater recently donated by the Lizárraga family.

El Centro Sidewalks Dangerous for Pedestrians

Sidewalks in Mazatlán’s El Centro district present a serious and dangerous problem for pedestrians.
During a walkabout in El Centro, media reported today detecting at least 20 risk areas for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and handicapped.

One is located on the sidewalk in front of the Cathedral on Calle Benito Juárez. A portion of the tile and cement have broken away leaving a sidewalk “pothole” where unsuspecting tourists admiring the Cathedral´s architecture have tripped or fallen.

Eroded sidewalk curb a danger to the distracted pedestrian.

Handicap ramps on the corners of Calles José María Canizález and Benito Júarez, and Benito Juárez and Melchor Ocampo are unpainted, blocked by transformer boxes or surrounded by deep potholes in the roads often full of water from employees washing sidewalks in front of their shops.

Covers stolen from inground water meters present a hazard.

At Melchor Ocampo and Aquiles Serdán, theft of small copper lids over water meters in the middle of the sidewalk has left eight holes in the pathway.

Said an employee of a nearby business, once a day at least one child or adult falls having tripped in the holes.

And at Teniente Azueta at the corner of Melchor Ocampo, 20 meters of the elevated sidewalk have fallen off and has become a trap for pedestrians who either are distracted or visually impaired and where, said resident Tania Ortega, she has seen many people fall.

Finally, an Elevator for the Asilo de Ancianos

The teamwork of the foreign community, local businesses and Mazatlecan families has crystalized into one of the most urgent necessities for the old folks’ home at Zaragoza Park in El Centro: an elevator.

Sara Robles de Carranza, a volunteer at the Asilo de Ancianos “La Inmaculada” said at the inauguration of the elevator on Saturday the idea began as a dream by three women eight years ago when discussing the needs of the elderly at the home, and today it came to fruition.

Approximately 30 elderly residents, caretakers and volunteers will all benefit from the long awaited elevator.

Association for the El Centro Project Presents Plan to Mayor

President of the Association, Alfredo Gómez Rubio Lemmen Meyer, discussed the project yesterday with Mayor Felton.

The Board of Directors of the Association for the El Centro Project, led by Alfredo Gómez Rubio Lemmen Meyer, its president, met with Mazatlán’s mayor, Carlos Felton, to present to him their proposal for the rehabilitation of El Centro.

At a projected cost of 30 million pesos ($2.25 million) the businessmen’s plan is divided into five phases.

Prior to the meeting with the mayor Gómez Rubio said, “These are projects have been in the works for some time, such as the idea of ??adequate parking in the Historic Center, as part of the mobility plan, a remodeling of the Plazuela Machado, landscaping, benches and other projects to widen sidewalks, and the rescue of three prior projects that were left unfinished, including underground wiring.”

The businessman said that 300,000 pesos ($22,500) has been spent to date to prepare final plans for the projects and they are ready to be implemented.

The City Council in a released announcement said the city would provide 70 percent of the funds needed to commence the work, with completion to be scheduled for next year.

Steamroller Print Project in El Centro Begins Tomorrow

Local print making artists invite the public to visit their open air steamroller print project beginning tomorrow through October 21 on the street between Miguel Alemán and Carnaval in El Centro from 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm.

This is the third consecutive year when the artists will create large prints depicting themes of Dia de Muertos which will be hung in the Angela Peralta Theater beginning November 1 for free public viewing.
