Income from International Tourists up Almost 17%

Claudia Ruiz Massieu Salinas, México’s Secretary of Tourism, reported that during the first five months of 2014 the country earned $7.02 billion from international tourists, up 16.7 percent over the same period in 2013.
The money earned from the 11.7 million foreign tourists vising México during that five month period was up a significant 19.2 percent over the January-May period last year.
The number of foreign tourists arriving by air during the first five months of this year was 6 million, up from 5.4 million during the same period last year; a 11 percent increase.
Average expenditures per tourist were also up during this year’s January-May period. Such expenditures averaged $939 per tourist compared to $865 during the 2013 period; an 8.5 percent increase.
The Secretary of Tourism said the government will invest 180 billion pesos ($13.8 billion) over the next five years in tourism infrastructure to turn the country into a global power in the tourism industry.
