Street Closures for Independence Day

The official celebration of México’s independence is begins with the traditional El Grito de Dolores on September 15, next Monday, and continuing through Tuesday.

Aaron Aguilar Iniguez, the Commander of Mazatlán’s Municipal Police, said that in anticipation of the upcoming celebration in the early morning hours of this coming Monday General Ángel Flores will be closed to traffic between 5 de Mayo and Benito Juárez. It will reopen on the morning of the 16^th.

In addition to the closure of General Ángel Flores, beginning at 3:00 pm on Monday Benito Juárez will be closed between Mariano Escobedo to Jose Maria Cañizález, 21 de Marzo will be closed from Benito Juárez to 5 de Mayo, and Guillermo Nelson will be closed between 21 de Marzo and Jose Maria Cañizález.

Mazatlán Ready to Celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Performances include the Folkloric Ballet, La Banda de Jazz, the Angela Peralta Chorale and singer Oscar Gómez.

On the evening of September 15, the traditional “Grito de Independencia” is celebrated throughout Mexico when authorities in Mexico from the President to Municipal Mayors and invited guests gather on balconies of public buildings at approximately 11pm to shout out “Viva México” three times in memory of the declaration of the Mexican War of Independence on September 16, 1810.

For this year’s annual celebration, Mazatlán’s Cultural Institute and municipal government have lined up an impressive array of free performances in the Plazuela República in front of city hall.

Performances begin at 8pm and this year will include Gerardo Bazúa, Luz María and Marcos Razo, three winners of the television program “The Voice Mexico.”

Also performing will be the Folkloric Ballet, La Banda de Jazz, the Angela Peralta Chorale, singer Oscar Gómez accompanied by the Banda La Mazatleca and the  Continental Mariachi group. Popular clown Trikis Trakes will be roaming through the crowd to delight children with his antics.

The evening will be rounded out with a spectacular fireworks display and dancing in the Plazuela.

On Tuesday morning, September 16, at approximately 9am the annual commemorative parade will take place along the Malecón and in El Centro.

Fiestas Patrias Begins with a Street Party at City Hall

As the national Mexican Independence Day approaches, the municipal government will offer for the first time in Mazatlán a “Verbena Popular” or street party to showcase local dishes and handicrafts.

Beginning Friday, September 12 through September 14, local handicrafts, art and regional gastronomical delights from the eight syndicates of Mazatlán will be on display in the inner patio of City Hall from 7pm to 10pm.

Mazatlán Begins Celebration of México’s Independence

A colorful symbolic Mexican flag was painted on City Hall outlined in green, white and red lights.

City Hall and Republica Plaza were ablaze in red, green and white lights, as the city began its celebration of the country’s independence from Spain, which is celebrated on September 16.

A colorful symbolic Mexican flag, painted on City Hall, was the backdrop for the city’s mayor, Carlos Felton, as he told the gathered audience “Thanks for joining us in this simple but significant event with which we begin our patriotic month in which we reaffirm our national values.”

Following the brief ceremony visitors proceeded to view an historical exhibition located inside City Hall, which has 20 images depicting the country’s struggle for independence.

Throughout the month of September there will be sporting, cultural, and social events to celebrate the country’s 204^th birthday.
