MEXICO CITY – José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE), thanked the diplomatic core in Mexico for the solidarity and concern its different governments have shown after the events in Iguala, Guerrero during a celebration of the 69th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) in Loreto, Baja California.
He also recognized the commitment of the federal government to attend and inform them about the issue without ambiguity and with all possible transparency.
The head of foreign affairs in Mexico expressed his dismay over the recent events in Guerrero and accepted the opportunity to speak clearly to the rest of the world.
He spoke about the actions the Mexican government has taken within the realm of its responsibility, its desire to clear up what has happened and apply justice along with the respective authorities.
During an annual work meeting of diplomats in Mexico, Meade said that the voice of Mexico concerning different issues on the international agenda is heard all over the world, due to the country’s high standards of global responsibility.
In this meeting, the head of SRE said that science, human development, history, gastronomy, heritage, human development and security make Mexico a relevant addition to the international scene.
Meade Kuribreña also said that the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto took the decision to straighten its institutional capacity and bring the challenges that face the country to the forefront.
Also present was UN Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo who spoke about the actions that Mexico has taken in the 67 years since it has been a member of the UN.
He noted Mexico’s mediation during the El Salvador conflict, resolved by the signing of peace accords in the Chapultepec Castle, the work of Grupo Contadora at the end of the last century and Mexico’s participation in the UN Security Council.
Gómez Robledo also made reference to the announcement by Peña Nieto that Mexico will return to the UN Peacekeeping operations. The UN is an appropriate place to address the issues that plague the international community, he said.
The representative from the United Nations System in Mexico, Marcia de Castro, alluded to the current state in which the UN lives and thanked Mexico for returning to its peacekeeping missions.
In addition, de Castro showed her solidarity with Mexico in reference to the events in Ayotzinapa and said that respect for human rights is an issue that must be paid attention to and constantly monitored.
