During the day yesterday vendors set up their carts and booths filling them with candies and merchandise, performers rehearsed songs, while workers put the finishing touches of red, green, and white paint on bandstands, all in anticipation of the celebration of Grito de Independencia, which was held last night.
As the evening drew closer to 11:00 pm, when the mayor would make his cry for independence, María del Rosario Torres Noriega, secretary of the City Counsel and on behalf of the mayor, went to the jail located in colonia Benito Juárez and released 10 prisoners. Her actions emulated those of Miguel Hidalgo, who 204 years ago released prisoners to join the country’s fight for independence.
Following the fireworks, celebrants danced to band music in the Plaza until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 11:00 Mazatlán mayor, Carlos Felton, left his office, accompanied by his wife, Sylvia Trevino, and headed to the city hall’s balcony. Members of the Eighth Military Battalion handed the mayor the flag of México as he walked onto the balcony. Met with whistles and shouts, he proclaimed the Grito de Independence, rang the bell and read the names of heroes of México’s independence.
Mazatlecos celebrated the 204th anniversary of México’s independence into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
