In consideration of the fact that the public space Mazatlecans most identify with is the Malecón, according to the Municipal Institute of Planning (Implan), the iconic boardwalk will soon undergo a stage of transformation to convert it into one of the most beautiful in the world.

The announcement was made by Fernando Valdez Solano, President of the Consejo para el
Desarrollo de Sinaloa sur (Codesin), at a board meeting yesterday. The remodeling will begin in July this year, he said, under the auspices of the Colegio de Arquitectos del Sur de Sinaloa AC and the Cámara Mexicana de la Industria de la Construcción with an investment of 1,800,000 pesos.

As well, said Valdez Solano, they are going to initiate a world-wide competition that will cost $80,000US to invite concept proposals for the transformation. A jury will decide which proposal is the most beautiful and suitable for Mazatlán and that one, he said, is the plan they will develop.

José Ramón Manguart Sánchez, President of the Tres Islas Hotel Association, added the infrastructure project will generate added value to the municipality, the community and the buildings constructed along the Malecón.

Media reported that in a 2012 winter survey of tourists, 32 percent mentioned Mazatlán´s Malecón as a preferred tourist site, second only to the municipality´s beaches.

In another study by Implan in relation to public spaces, 60 percent of Mazatlecans surveyed in various colonias put the Malecón first in their preferences, stating it was the main symbol of the city.
