The construction of the new Vendados baseball stadium, an “on again, off again” project muddied by concerns that its principal backer Groupo Modelo, recently sold to Anhauser-Busch, might not continue its sponsorship, appears to be back on track.
On Tuesday Mazatlán Mayor Alejandro Higuera met with Sinaloa Governor Mario López Valdez and the 12 owners of land in Cerritos where the plan is to build a “sports city.”
The sports complex will include a new baseball stadium for Mazatlán’s Triple A baseball team, the Venados, a commercial zone, restaurants, theme park, auditorium, offices and roads.
The Mayor told reporters preliminary studies are ready to be presented to the Municipal Council for ratification. He did not expect council members to oppose the budget of over 1,000 million pesos for the project because society has demanded it.
He added the sports complex could be completed within three years.
Financing for the project will be divided among the State government, groupo Pacifico and the Mazatlán municipality. The municipality intends to sell property it owns in front of Hotel Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay in Cerritos and the present Teodoro Mariscal baseball stadium to finance its share of the investment.
The Mayor assured reporters that the Teodoro Mariscal stadium would not be sold until the new stadium was operating so as not to interrupt the Venados seasonal games.
