Just You and the Waves: Great Surfing Spots in Mazatlán, Mexico

Clipboard02

With miles of coastline from north to south, remote wave spots known by only a few and a warm climate all year long, it is no wonder that the city of Mazatlán is one of Mexico's most sought after surfing destinations.

The waves here meet the expectations of hundreds of tourists each year, from beginners to experts. Surfing in Mazatlán (also known as the land of left-point breaks) is very popular from April to October, but the waves can be conquered all year long.

If for some reason you can not pack your surfboard along, Mazatlan Surf Center next door to Dairy Queen on Ave is a good place to rent one. Playa Bruja (“The Beach of the Witches”) is most known for its adventurous, height-impressive waves. Wake up as early as possible and head 40 kilometers northwest of Mazatlán.

Get someone experienced to come along (preferably someone living in the area) and prepare to be amazed: it is here that you can take advantage of some of the best wave spots on the Pacific coast, with very few people around.

Cerritos beach (located a few miles north of Mazatlan) is calm and tranquil, offering tourists a chance to relax, bring a book along or have a picnic. Swimming in its waters can be quite an adventure, due to strong waves and undertows. Which is why another fun thing to do at Playa Los Cerritos is watch the surfers in action or… conquer the waves yourself.

The Stone Island (located on the south-side of the old harbor next to the lighthouse) offers two main spectacular surfing spots, with breaks very close to the rocks, meaning they are for experienced people only. Mazatlan surf scene also includes Playa Olas Atlas, a small pebbly beach in a small cove and Playa Los Pinos, but these are both located within the perimeter of the city and therefore are very crowded.

When surfing in Mazatlan, communication can get you a long way. The inhabitants are very friendly and eager to help you learn new moves and tricks.
