The proceeds of the The Spectaular 1 Concert on March 19th will go toward the three main activities of the Mazatlán Music Lovers Club (MMLC), a non-profit Mexican corporation: (1) raise money for local charities; (2) promote tourism to Mazatlán; and, (3) promote our local musicians.
The first objective is being accomplished through our band, called Our Gang ("little rascals"), which plays on Monday nights at La Palapa del Mar, and hosts fundraising events or evenings for charities. They have raised over 54,000 pesos this season, with another month or so to go. All bonafide charitable organizations are welcome to participate; a copy of our fundraiser policies will be sent upon request.
As for the second goal, to promote tourism, we asked, "What can the musicians possibly do?" The answer was "make music!". So we set about producing a CD featuring some of the great local musicians, as our way of sending a positive message about our city. Our hope is to get it into the hands of Americans and Canadians as an antidote to all the negative media, and to encourage them to come visit. [This represents an unprecedented cooperative effort by the musicians, who have donated tracks and time.]
The Spectacular 1 Concert, then, features the musicians on the CD (it is called Mazatlán Sampler, sort of like the chocolate candy assortment sold up North) and is essentially a CD release party. Both the CD and the Concert then also help with our third objective of promoting local musicians.
We are also working on a website directory of the musicians. Plus, this Fall we will begin producing new CDs, but most likely themed, a jazz album; one all blues; Mexican musicians and music; a country CD, and so forth.
The Concert looks to be a huge success; we have sold about half the tickets in the first three days! Most of the ticket price goes to the facility, for the use of the building, sound system, and lighting, plus the dinner and open bar. Giancarlo and Spectaculare, by the way, are donating 20 pesos for each ticket sold to the "Old Folks Home" here in Mazatlán, Asilo de Ancianos de Mazatlan. It looks like we will cover costs and may even generate some money to cover a portion of the costs of producing the CD.
The bottom line is that all proceeds go toward the objectives of the MMLC, and/or to other charities. All members and officers of the Club are volunteers; they have not received any compensation, nor will they in the future. Everyone is invited to join.
Please feel free to contact us for any other questions or information about the MMLC. Go to www.mazatlanlife.com/mmlc for the latest updated information regarding the Concert.
Music is a big component of the Mexican culture, and the vast amount of talent right here in Mazatlán contributes so much to the experience of visiting or living here. The Mazatlán Music Lovers Club was formed to help more people enjoy more of the music here, and to support our community along the way.
