Declaring 2011 the year of putting in place projects that brought water to Mazatlán, Jumapam Director General Cornelio Camacho Ceballos said 2012 will be the year of investment in clean water plants for the municipality.

Projects completed last year have resulted in producing sufficient water for Mazatlán’s citizenry, putting a stop to complaints about lack of water service, he said. In 2012 the challenge will be improving the treatment of residual waters and sanitizing the 1,700 liters of potable water for domestic use.

While last year’s Jumapam budget was 280 million pesos, the 78 proposed projects for this year will require 175.4 million pesos of which 38 million must come from the Jumapam budget, money the paramunicipal department does not have.

If authorization is not given to increase taxes for the water tariff by 18 percent, drainage by 50 percent and treatment by 15 percent, the proposed projects will be at risk of not going on line this year.

Among the water treatment proposals are completion of the Norponiente Water Treatment Plant with the capacity to clean 400 liters per second, upgrading the old el Creston plant and finishing the Urías treatment plant with a 220 liters per second capacity.

Several wells are in progress or planned, including the Atlántico which is ready for operation but awaiting a payment to CFE for the electric connection, the Burócrata which is slated to be completed in March, El Roble and three in Villa Unión.

As well, Jumapam plans to install pressure lines to conduct residual waters to the treatment plant at Villa Unión in an effort to eliminate the contamination of the Presidio River.
