Municipality Unveils Infrastructure Projects for 2012

José Luis Sevilla Suárez Peredo, of the municipal secretary of public works, told media yesterday that funds from federal and state governments in the amount of 154 million pesos would be distributed among 24 infrastructure projects in the coming year.
Among the projects are the rehabilitation of Mazatlán’s Cathedral, replacement of sidewalks on Venustiano Carranza Street, restoration of monuments and glorietas on the Malecón and replacement of concrete sidewalks in El Centro with cobblestones.
Mazatlán’s aquarium will benefit from the government funding as well, said Suárez Peredo. The shark tank will be finished and 20 million pesos will be invested in repairing the tank’s floor and tiles. He noticed, he said, that there is no air conditioning in the viewing area and during the summer the viewing area is an oven. He hopes to find funds to install air conditioners by the summer.
Other infrastructure projects include remodeling the operating room of the General Hospital, electrical and lighting upgrades in Mazatlán´s industrial park, construction of architectural elements on Emilio Barragán and Miguel Aleman avenues, installation of cables and roadworks.
What is not possible, said Suárez Peredo, is to use the 67 million pesos destined in 2011 to construct a walkway for cruise ship passengers to instead upgrade the Malecón in 2012 as proposed by Mazatlán Mayor Alejandro Higuera.
There are rules for the use of these funds, he said, and it appears using the funds to upgrade the Malecón does not fall with the parameters.
