Despite international economic pressures and security concerns, Mazatlán’s local immigration office has seen a recent rise in applications from foreigners to live in Mazatlán.
Óscar Tirado Tirado, of the Instituto Nacional de Migración, said yesterday indications are that the jump in applications will continue next year. The prediction is based on having processed 40 visas per day in December 2011.
The increase has been considerable in foreigners living here who are Americans and Canadians and who have come because they see the city is a good place to live and have never considered it to be insecure, said Tirado Tirado.
Those applying for permanent residency are baby boomers who retired and are looking for a secure and calm location where they can live half the year when it is cold in their home country, or settle permanently.
We had a very good year in 2011, he said. Last Monday when we re-opened our offices after the holidays we registered an important increase in the number of foreigners registering for permission for permanent residency.
