Alaska Airlines Cancels One Flight to Mazatlán

The airline sent a written notification that the Tuesday Los Angeles-Mazatlán flight is cancelled.

Alaska Airlines, which has been flying from Los Angeles, California to Mazatlán six times a week, notified the Atamsa secretary general that the airline is cancelling one of those flights.

Jesús Román Aguayo Hernández of Atamsa explained to media that the airline sent a written notification that the Tuesday Los Angeles-Mazatlán flight is cancelled. The airline will continue to fly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The notification surprised him, said Aguayo Hernández, since the six day schedule was programmed until March 7.

The Alaska flight leaves Los Angeles at 1:45pm for Mazatlán. The Mazatlán-Los Angeles flight departs the city at 2:40pm.

The secretary general said he hopes the cancellation is temporary and will not affect those planning on visiting Mazatlán. At the moment flights are almost full and on the weekends often over-booked, he commented.

Although he was not advised of the reason for the cancellation, Aguayo Hernández did point out that Delta Airlines also flies from Los Angeles to Mazatlán.

Mexican President Peña Nieto starts California tour in Los Angeles

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto arrived to the International Airport of Los Angeles to begin a visit to California, home of some 11.5 million people from Mexican heritage.

Peña Nieto and his wife, Angélica Rivera, as well as their entourage, were received at 2:30 pm by Chief of Protocol Charlotte Schultz, the Joint Protocol Chief of Los Angeles County, Lourdes Saab, and Mexican ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora, among others.

The President is looking forward to improve the positive relationship with California and the close cooperation between both governments. It is hoped that it will also help to improve the relationship with the people of Mexican origin in the state.

According to the presidential agenda, the visit aims to offer them better consular services and praise them as determining factors of development, prosperity and growth.

Peña Nieto will meet with the Governor of California, Edmund G. Brown, and the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti.

The border between Mexico and California is 145 miles long, representing 7% of the total of 1,969 miles between Mexico and the US. The Tijuana-San Diego area is one of the most active borders in the world and Mexico is the main destiny for Californian exports, being the third commercial partner of the state, after China and Japan.

In 2013, the bilateral commerce ascended to 60,174 million dollars, almost the same as the commercial exchange with China. Mexico exported 36,933 million dollars to California.

MAZATLÁN._ A partir del próximo mes de octubre, Delta Airlines sumará un nuevo vuelo en la ruta Los Ángeles-Mazatlán, en aviones con capacidad para 160 personas y con frecuencia de seis veces por semana, anunció el secretario de Turismo, Francisco Córdova Celaya.

"Es un nuevo vuelo que viene en otoño, pero ya es permanente; eso nos va a aumentar casi en mil asientos por semana, y nos va a dar 20 por ciento más de asientos internacionales", precisó.

Adicionalmente, reveló, se llevan negociaciones con Frontier, Sun Wing, West Jet y otras líneas internacionales, que han mostrado su interés por volar a Mazatlán, así como aumentar asientos disponibles y frecuencias.

"Frontier viene bien, ya anunciaron que van a comprar aviones, uno de los primeros destinos que contemplan es Mazatlán, pero no quieren dar la noticia hasta que no tengan 'amarrados' los equipos", agregó el funcionario.

Dentro de las negociaciones, Córdova adelantó que es muy probable recuperar la conexión directa a Houston, que se perdió con la fusión de Continental y Us Airways.

Para ello, continúan las gestiones con esta última compañía, al igual que con Delta, y se espera que una de las dos retome ese vuelo.

Según el titular de la Sectur, Mazatlán cuenta con una oferta de 68 mil asientos aéreos internacionales en la temporada invernal, que abarca del mes de octubre a abril del siguiente año.

La meta es llegar a los 100 mil asientos, recuperando la totalidad de los que se habían perdido luego de la crisis financiera de 2008 y de la ola de inseguridad, que afectó la llegada de turismo en el País.

Sobre el proceso de gestión para aumentar la conectividad aérea, el Secretario descartó el pago de garantías a las compañías aéreas, pues aseguró que "música pagada toca mal son".

En contraparte, acotó, lo que se busca es asociarse con las aerolíneas en materia de promoción.
