The Abarcas: representative of abuse by government.excélsior

The Imperial Couple of Iguala, Guerrero, were the focus of Carnaval in Mazatlán on Saturday: their effigies were burned to rid the city of ill humor.

The 118th edition of the International Carnaval of Mazatlán, described by Forbes magazine as the world’s third biggest, polled local citizens to determine who should be chosen for the traditional “burning of ill humor.”

The winners were José Luis Albarca, former mayor of Iguala, and his wife, María de los Angeles Pineda, allegedly a principal of the crime gang Guerreros Unidos, both of whom are now in jail.

They were chosen not only because they are presumed responsible for the crimes committed on September 26 in which 49 people were killed by local police and gang members, but for being representative of what is wrong with government in Mexico, said the director of Culture Mazatlán.

They represent the bad leadership of all political parties and of all the abuses that have enabled their enrichment through the sacrifice of Mexican citizens, said Raúl Rico González.

Before thousands of tourists and residents, effigies of the former mayor and his wife were loaded with rockets and when they exploded, both the representations of the couple and ill humor were consumed by the flames, along with all the ills that have troubled society over the past year.
The fire left nothing behind but the joy and delight of Carnaval.
