Mazatlán’s local motor vehicle office has been saturated recently with people
waiting in enormously long lines primarily for new license plates, followed by
those applying for driver licenses, motorcycle licences and learner’s
permits.
Department of Transport personnel stated just yesterday they issued 180 licenses.
Octavio Laveaga Zamora, subdelegate of the department of roads and transport, said the high demand is because of the 2015 Tenencia subsidy that went into effect January 1. The State subsidy waives annual additional taxes on newer cars less than 10 years old. He also suggested the municipality’s Zero Tolerance programme has forced drivers to obtain licenses or bring them up-to-date.
The high demand for licenses is also reflected at the Gran Plaza shopping mall module and drivers’ education.
To obtain a driver’s license, the subdelegate advised, the person has to present his birth certificate, household bill (electric, water or telephone), identification and blood type, the original and a copy. To renew, the person need only present his identification and household bill.
Laveaga Zamora commented he expects the high demand for services to continue into the next month.
