During a work tour in The Hague Monday, Foreign Relations Secretary José Antonio Meade Kuribreña said the Mexican government proposes increased contact between the Mexican and Dutch entrepreneurial communities and strengthened economic and commercial links.
The Mexican official and his Dutch counterpart, Albert Koenders, stressed the economic potential Mexico and the Netherlands share, and agreed to increase cooperative projects now underway in agriculture, port infrastructure, education and water resources.
The Tabasco Complete Water Plan is especially important, Meade said. It was implemented with Dutch experts to prevent floods like those in Tabasco in 2007. Meade and Koenders reviewed the progress of the project, which includes participation of both the public and private sectors.
With the Netherlands acting as an observer of the Pacific Alliance, Meade expressed his wish to continue dialogue with companies from the Netherlands to explore business opportunities within the regional integration mechanism.
Meade and Koenders also agreed to continue dialogue toward specific goals in academic exchange and scholarships.
In 2014, the Netherlands was ranked 12th among Mexico’s world-wide partners, and fourth among European Union nations.
It is the second-largest foreign investor in Mexico.
The Foreign Relations Secretariat said between 1999 and 2014, Dutch investment in Mexico reached nearly $50 million. The main sectors to receive Dutch capital are manufacturing, financial services, construction, professional services and trade.
