Mikel Arriola, Director of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris), told reporters that in the first half of next year México will get the new vaccine against dengue developed by the pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur. This will make México the first country to get the vaccine and Arriola said that the vaccine could be given to people by the end of next year or the beginning of 2016.
The pharmaceutical company that developed the vaccine said that it hopes to have 40 to 50 million doses ready by the end of 2015 and distributed to countries that request it.
The announcement comes as a blessing to Sinaloa, as the Federal Ministry of Health reported that for the seven day period ending November 3 a total of 366 cases of dengue were reported in the state. This brings the total number of reported cases to 2,592 so far this year.
The incidence of dengue fever in Sinaloa is 87.67 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This places the state in third place in the country behind only the states of Baja California Sur with a rate of 466.53 per 100,000 and Colima with 97.39 per 100,000.
The states of Sinaloa, Baja California Sur, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Guerrero account for 54 percent of the 23,533 confirmed cases of dengue fever reported in the country.
