The Mexican conglomerate Alfa is expanding its presence in the energy sector with a new US $700-million gas-fired electrical generation plant in Altamira, Tamaulipas.
The 600 MW facility will be built in two phases of 300 MW each, said the firm’s director of energy, Raúl Millares. The first, costing $400 million, will begin in January and the second, with a price tag of $300 million, will begin in 2016.
Part of the electrical production of the new plant will be for Alfa’s own use and part for sale to third parties.
Millares said Mexico has a great opportunity to take advantage of North America’s lower natural gas prices in relation to the rest of the world. He expects that future electrical energy costs for industry could drop by as much as 40%.
The Monterrey-based Alfa, which produces products ranging from auto parts to refrigerated foods, is currently opening a new 100 MW co-generation plant in Cosoleacaque, Veracruz, that will sell 80% of its output over the national electrical grid.
Mellares said Alfa is also interested in a shale gas venture.
