The number of foreign visitors arriving by air was up nearly 11% in the first six months of the year, reports the Tourism Secretariat.
Of those 6.9 million visitors, the majority — 3.9 million — came from the United States, a figure that was up by 13%. The next source of tourists was Canada with 1.05 million, up nearly 6%.
Visitors from the United Kingdom numbered almost 205,000, a figure that was up by almost 7%.
Tourism officials said there were also increases seen in visitors from emerging economies such as Venezuela, China, Colombia and Brazil.
The statistics are generated by the National Immigration Institute.
Tourism is the country’s fifth biggest source of revenues, which were estimated at US $12.7 billion last year by JPMorgan Chase, up 10.5%.
