THE NEWS
President Enrique Peña Nieto praised Mexico’s democratic strength on
Wednesday, saying that change through reforms was possible in that
country, unlike the political paralysis that has mired other nations
around the world.
Speaking at a Turkish-Mexican Business Forum, he said that energy
reform is the most important structural change in the last few decades,
and that it looks “to open us to the world” without losing the energy
riches of the Mexican state.
He also said the reform will amplify the
nation’s resource-exploitation capabilities, boost investment and jobs
and ensure cheaper energy.
“We are not a closed economy, on the contrary, we have been preparing
ourselves for successful insertion into the global economy,” said Peña
Nieto.
The tax reform, he said, “is a rough ... matter for any nation, but
it is necessary for things to happen and for the social demand to be
attended to.” He didn’t elaborate on what these demands are or how they
will be met.
“These reforms provide an important framework for Mexico to find
itself with a secure future, with judicial certainty for foreign
investment,” said Peña Nieto after witnessing the signing of a contract
between a Mexican and a Turkish company, which will result in a $100
million investment in Mexico.
Hours before the forum, Peña Nieto awarded Varol Dereli, honorary
Mexican consul in Istanbul, with the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle,
which is awarded to foreigners who lend their services to Mexico or for
furthering noble causes for humanity.
