Upon inaugurating the Mezquital-Huazamota highway in La Candelaria,
Durango on Monday, President Enrique Peña Nieto claimed that the
proposed and approved reforms during his administration have created
“bases of greater development in benefit of Mexican families.”
“In this first year of government there has been much talk of
structural reforms, of great transformations, because that is what we
have been driving. We have sewed throughout this year important bases
that will allow us in the coming years to have greater development and
economic growth,” he added.
“For the year 2014, practically all government dependencies,
especially those that have much to invest in infrastructure, in roads,
in highways, in health, will have more resources. It’s the result of a
tax reform that will make it possible that these dependencies and all
government agencies have more resources to invest, not to expand the
bureaucratic apparatus,” he continued.
While celebrating the beginning of his second year as president with
the Tepehuano, Huichol, Cora and Mexicanero ethnic groups of Durango, he
said that this is a time to “rediscover our roots and remember that we
are one country, plural and with a great diversity.”
He said that the country needs to realize that it is a mosaic of
different realities and that “this government is fundamentally focused
on achieving development and progress that benefits more Mexicans in all
regions of the country.”
The president’s office says that the 1-billion-peso ($76-million)
Mezquital-Huazamota highway will benefit indigenous communities and
producers in general, reducing transport time from 11 to three hours.
Social Development Secretary Rosario Robles Berlanga was also present
at the inauguration, and took the opportunity to talk about the
regional enrollment numbers in social programs.
According to her figures, 36,000 women are enrolled in the Women of
the Family Insurance Program, more than 30,000 senior citizens are
enrolled in the 65 and Up Program, and 380,000 families benefit from the
Opportunities program.
