MEXICO CITY – Twelve months after his inauguration, President Enrique
Peña Nieto said that his first year in office has been dedicated to
promoting transformational reforms.
Peña Nieto’s comments were made during the National Sports Award
ceremony, where he also thanked Mexico’s athletes for showing the world
that Mexicans are capable of successfully competing on the international
stage.
According to Peña Nieto, the highest priority of his administration
is to reach agreements with Mexico’s opposition parties to promote the
structural reforms the country needs to advance and develop.
“The reforms that have been approved and that I hope will be approved
soon are the base for allowing Mexico to grow at a more rapid,
sustained and sustainable rhythm in the coming years and decades,” he
said, going on to mention the benefits that he said Mexico would see as a
result of modifications to the country’s laws on education,
telecommunications, finance and transparency.
The education reform, he said, will elevate teaching standards in
public schools, while the reforms addressing economic competition and
the telecommunications sector will allow Mexicans to have access to
higher quality services at lower prices.
Peña Nieto said that the tax reform will strengthen the government’s
ability to raise revenue, while the transparency reform will promote
government accountability and the financial reform will make it easier
for small- and medium-sized businesses to access credit at lower
interest rates.
He went on to say that he expects the political-electoral and energy
reforms currently being discussed in Congress to be approved soon.
