A medical team at Sharp Hospital in Mazatlán performed a successful kidney transplant from a live donor this week. It was the sixth kidney transplant performed at the hospital since 1997.

Surgeon Fredy López López said at a press conference yesterday it was the first transplant performed this year by a new transplant team that began working at the hospital three months ago.

The 39-year-old patient Édgar Isidro Félix Cervantes, a Mazatlán lawyer, received his new kidney from good friend, 43-year-old Mario Soto Alvardado.

The pre-dialysis patient is responding well to treatment, the surgeon said, considering his failing health before the transplant and he is expected to recover fully.

He went on to explain that organs can be transplanted from those who have died of cerebral causes but studies have proven live donations present no risk to the patient or the donor.

Félix Cervantes told reporters in 2005 he went to the hospital with a kidney stone where he was advised his kidneys were failing. Since that time, he said, he has been waiting for a transplant.

Since the operation on December 5, he said, he has a normal life again thanks to his friend of 20 years who did not hesitate to donate his kidney.
