The
Chiapas Health Secretariat signed a collaboration agreement with the
National Blood Transfusion Center on Monday to share stem cells.
The agreement establishes that the Chiapas Health Secretariat will
collect placental blood and send it to National Blood Transfusion Center
so it can be used for therapeutic purposes or in clinical research.
Stem cell therapy is currently used in bone marrow transplants for
patients recovering from leukemia and lymphoma, as the incredible
regenerative abilities of stem cells allows patients to rapidly recover
from chemotherapy, which kills off most of the growing cells in a
patient’s body.
Doctors expect that stem cell therapy can one day be used to treat a
wide range of conditions, including diabetes, infertility and
degenerative brain conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, but
more research needs to be conducted.
Gov. Manuel Velasco Coello said that this collaboration agreement
shows that Chiapas is working to apply better health policies. Velasco
Coello said that Chiapas wants to position itself on the cutting edge of
medical innovation and take advantage of the benefits of the latest
technology, so that the state’s entire population will have access to
improved medical services.
Velasco Coello invited pregnant women to voluntarily donate umbilical
cord blood after they give birth, which he said would set an example
for the rest of Chiapas and create an altruistic culture of organ
donation.
