MEXICO CITY –President Enrique Peña Nieto announced a relief plan on
Thursday for the state of Guerrero, torn apart by Tropical Storm Manuel
in September.
The Chamber of Deputies has agreed upon a Guerrero contingency fund
to ensure the state’s residents get the assistance they need, Peña Nieto
said.
“It’s been decided to support Guerrero in the federal budget by
increasing the amount of spending by the National Fund for Natural
Disasters (Fonden) by 7 billion pesos ($529 million),” Peña Nieto said,
Peña Nieto also announced the New Guerrero Plan, which is designed to
stimulate the economy of Guerrero — already one of Mexico’s poorest
states before it was devastated by the storm.
The plan would improve the logistical and industrial infrastructure
along the coast of Guerrero from the port of Balsas to Lázaro Cárdenas
in neighboring Michoacán, as well as expanding the state’s fiber optic
network and potable water and drainage infrastructure.
The New Guerrero Plan also aims to boost productivity in important
economic sectors like tourism, culture and manufacturing, as well as
social programs designed to lower the state’s high rate of domestic
violence and increase literacy and economic self-sufficiency in
indigenous communities.
“For this to bear fruit and benefit those who need it most, transparency and social participation are needed,” Peña Nieto said.
