Meteorology
is becoming an important area of study for government civil protection
agencies, particularly in Veracruz, State Civil Protection Secretary
Noemí Guzmán Lagunes said on Monday.
Guzmán’s comments were made during the inauguration of the 22nd
Mexican Meteorology Conference and the Seventh International Meteorology
Conference in Boca del Río, Veracruz.
These conferences, she said, highlight Mexico’s commitment to be a
globally responsible actor while also allowing it to learn about
international practices on monitoring and predicting extreme weather
conditions, as well as the institutional and social coordination of
early alert systems.
Prevention and opportune emergency response have always been an
imperative in hurricane-prone Veracruz, Guzmán went on to say, and the
Civil Protection Agency’s priority is always to save lives.
“In the Veracruz Disaster Mitigation Strategy, the early alert system
is a key element to saving lives,” she added. “We have created our own
state early alert system, the Gray Alert, and we have trained government
authorities and communities to understand the alert levels and act in a
timely manner.”
Guzmán said that these conferences will allow experts from countries
like the United States, England, Cuba, Ecuador and Brazil to share
experiences on meteorological problems and evaluate the lessons learned
over the past year, to make the country’s alert and early response
systems more effective.
