Surburbia opens in Gran Plaza

Following an investment of 80 million pesos ($6.25 million) the department store Surburbia opens today in Grand Plaza. It occupies the space which was previously the home of Fabricas de Francia.

Raúl Valdez Hernández, Director of Economic Development for the City of Mazatlán, said the store would create 136 new direct jobs and 36 indirect jobs.

The department store will carry clothing and footwear; jewelry and accessories; perfume, beauty, household items; and cell phones and electronics.

The Surburia chain opened its first store in 1970. It now has 102 stores located in 27 different states in Mexico.

Facelift Planned for Zona Dorada

The first stage is a general clean-up and maintenance of the zone.

Mazatlán’s Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), declared a “zone in ruins” last week by the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism, is finally getting some attention.

Following a proposal by the Frente Empresarial al Servicio del Turismo comprised of businesses in the Golden Zone, the facelift will begin with maintenance projects, said subsecretary of tourism Rafael Lizárraga Favela.

Speaking to reporters, Lizárraga Favela did not define how long the facelift would take nor the cost but did say it would take place in three stages.

The first stage is a general clean-up and maintenance of the zone so that tourists who visit this summer will find a different face of the area, he said. This will form part of a general municipal clean-up scheduled to take four years.

The second stage includes plans to install urban equipment, plant trees, install lighting and street signs.

The third and most costly stage will involve upgrading the infrastructure. Lizárraga Favela pointed out the zone is subject to flooding during high seas and the rainy season requiring installation of hydraulic equipment.
With respect to the walkways to the beach, the subsecretary said they must make them attractive, including bathrooms and snack bars because, he pointed out, the area is comprised of concrete and sidewalks, without any type of garden.

The subsecretary met with members of the municipal tourism commission to coordinate the projects and discuss the financial resources needed to rehabilitate the zone.

The municipality can help by detecting problems and assist the Secretary of Tourism with public services such as cleaning and parks and gardens, and together they can find the resources to remodel and improve infrastructure in the tourist zone, added Sergio Romero Barrera, coordinator of the municipal tourism commission.

New tourist police ready to take the streets of Mazatlán

The Secretary of Public Security for Mazatlán, Pablo Andrés Hernández Lizárraga, announced yesterday the formation of a new police unit which will, he said, increase security while providing a positive image for tourists.
The new security force will begin operations with 3 jeep Patriots, a Chevy Tahoe, 10 motorcycles, and 25 bicycles, all of which will be new. The exact number of police that will man the new force has yet to be determined.

Hernández Lizárraga said the dress of the new police force will also be more tourist-friendly, possibly wearing shorts and tennis shoes.

The new police force will be seen from the Cerritos areas all the way south to Olas Altas and from Avenida del Mar to the golden Zone.

He added that the force would be 100% manned within the next 100 days and that the police are currently being trained.
