Cal Jet Air to operate Houston-Mazatlan service

Cal Jet Air will begin flying between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Mazatlan, Mexico, next year.
Starting Jan. 11, Cal Jet will operate nonstop flights Fridays and Mondays. The flight out of Houston departs 12:30 p.m. and arrives in Mazatlan at 1:30 p.m. The flight out of Mazatlan departs at 8 a.m. and arrives in Houston at 11 a.m.
As part of its pilot program running Jan. 9 to April 9, Cal Jet will also offer flights from San Antonio, Denver, Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., to Mazatlan.
Minneapolis-based Cal Jet is operated by Xtra Airways of Boise, Idaho.
Last month, Chicago-based United Continental Holdings Co. (NYSE: UAL) and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) also said they would expand service in Houston.
United Airlines will add its third daily service between Bush Intercontinental and London’s Heathrow Airport starting March 30. Southwest said it will convert certain AirTran Airways routes to Southwest nonstop service beginning April 14.
Florida-based Spirit Airlines Inc. (Nasdaq: SAE) launched its initial service from Bush Intercontinental in September and expanded it last month.

The announcement follows extensive research conducted by Mexico Tourism Board on air connectivity, airline efficiency and air capacity from major American markets, in particular, which shows that Mazatlan needs more air seats to keep up with growing demand. As a consequence, the state government invested in this strategic partnership with Cal Jet whereby increased investment in marketing will, in turn, create increased in-bound airline activity to Mazatlan.
