The Mazatlan Messenger
Mazatlán businessman, Ernesto Coppel Kelly, developer of the project, confirmed that Cal Jet will begin landing in Mazatlán this coming December, in order to recover the seats that were lost with the departure of Continental and United Airlines.
Cal Jet, with a home base in San Diego, California, is a privately owned public charter airline that exclusively flies the Boeing 737-400 twin engine aircraft.
Coppel Kelly said, “We’re hiring Cal Jet, an American company, which will have several flights a week from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and San Antonio. This situation was caused by cancellation of flights we have suffered and now there are very few. The idea is that with this airline we can regain connectivity with the U.S. market that comes to Mazatlán.”
To entice Cal Jet to fly direct to Mazatlán, state and municipal authorities and hotel owners cooperated to provide a sum of money for the carrier in case passenger levels fail to meet expectations.
The municipality of Mazatlán will put up $100,000US and the state of Sinaloa will put up 12 million pesos ($925,000US). The airline will be able to tap into this reserve if passenger levels fall below 75%.
