The birth of Mazatlán’s Volunteer Fire Department occurred as neighbors stood helplessly when a house in El Centro burned out of control. Dr. Olavo Crown decided that something had to be done to protect the citizens of Mazatlán against fires and created the first volunteer fire department for the city. The first group of fire fighters was neighbors and friends with a few hoses and buckets and Dr. Olavo Crown’s car to transport the people and equipment to reported fires. That was January 13, 1942.

Since then the volunteer fire department has grown in size and expanded the services it provides the citizens of Mazatlán. The fire department now provides emergency medical care to the injured, provides medical transfers, and provides training and advice to the public.

Enrique Magdaleno Orozco, who has been a volunteer fire fighter for 40 years, said that the mayor wants to donate land to the fire department so as to create a home base for them. The land is located in Venadillo.
