Mayor Felton’s 2015 Wish List

Mazatlán’s mayor, Carlos Felton González, told reporters yesterday that next year he plans on making Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island) into a colonial town.
The mayor said, “We want the Isla de la Piedra to become kind of a colonial town so there is not a noticeable demarcation between the town and the sustainable Amaitlán project currently under construction.” He added that he wanted people to go to Stone Island not just for the beaches, but to visit the town, as well.
He pointed out the project would include rehabilitating the roads, building a wastewater treatment plant and remodeling and painting the facades of the town’s structures.
He said the Stone Island project is one of 20 he has planned for 2015.
Also included in his 2015 plans is the reconstruction of the palapas damaged and destroyed during Hurricane Norbert.
The mayor also told reporters he is looking for investors that would be interested in installing a cable car to Mazatlán’s lighthouse, El Faro.

Mayor Wants Uniformity in Palapas

To project a look of uniformity the Municipal Planning Institute has gotten involved the reconstruction of palapas located from Avenida del Mar up to Cerritos.

At a meeting with owners of the city’s palapas on Saturday the mayor said he would like to see a model of a standard palapa proposed by the Mazatlán Union of Palapa Owners within the next 15 days. Until that time the city will not approve construction plans.

Enriqueta Manjarrez Salazar, president of the union, said “We told the mayor that we will support the plan and see if is feasible, we want to work and we are not going to disappear.”

The union president said six palapas were totally destroyed and most of the others sustained varying degrees of damage. The average cost to make the needed repairs is 100,000 pesos ($7,700). Money the owners do not have.

Mazatlán Loses Almost Half of its Palapas

Enriqueta Manjarrez Salazar, president of the Palapa Owners Union of Mazatlán, told reporters that the high waves from hurricane Norbert devastated the palapas located on the beaches of the city.
Damage was seen from Avenida del Mar all the way north to Cerritos. Of the 18 palapas located on these beaches only 10 survived, he said.  Enriqueta Manjarrez added that eight palapas totally disappeared, as the high waves torn them down and drugged them out to sea.
The head of the union said the owners would be asking the city for permission to set up tents so they can sell coconuts, soft drinks, and whatever they can to meet the needs of their customers and provide some income for them
He added, “We are also asking the support of the City Council in that they not charge us building permits because they are very cumbersome and expensive.”
