Employees of 15 hotels of the Asociación de Hoteles y Empresas Turísticas de Mazatlán hit the beaches yesterday between El Cid and Los Flores hotels to pick up garbage and debris left behind by tourists and locals during the recent holidays.

Under the campaign “Playas Limpias” 70 employees and guests at various hotels combed the sand and empty lots carrying large, black garbage bags.

Salvador Sánchez, General Manager of the El Cid Hotel, said the beaches were not as dirty as they expected but what they did find were some 10,000 cigarette butts. Ever since Coprefis banned smoking (in restaurants and enclosed areas) everyone, he stated, goes to the beach from the hotels to smoke, leaving the beaches looking dirty.

For Mazatlán’s lifeguard squad, the most complicated and hazardous day on the municipality’s beaches during Semana Santa was Friday, April 3 when an estimated 118,000 people packed up their umbrellas, chairs and coolers and spent the day by the ocean.

The squad reported 49 rescues between March 28 and April 5 none of which resulted in serious injury. Lifeguards also attended to swimmers stung by jellyfish and sting rays.

A bulletin from the Municipal Secretary of Public Security advised police had detained 391 people mainly for public drunkenness and misdemeanors, 152 of which were arrested in beach locations and 239 in urban areas.

The department of roads reported that between April 1 and April 5, 17 automobile accidents were attended to, mainly within the city limits.

For the first time in 2015, Mazatlán lifeguards are warning beach goers of manta rays in the shallow waters of beaches of Stone Island, the Zona Dorada, Playa Bruja and along the Malecón.

Cruz Roja reported attending to around 13 people stung by manta rays during the days of Carnaval and last weekend, all of whom were visiting from Durango and Chihuahua.

Lifeguard squad commander, Sergio Cervantes Rodríguez, recommended swimmers watch for the yellow flags indicating the presence of manta rays and when entering the water splash noisily to force the manta rays from their nests into deeper water.

All Calm on the Beaches, say Lifeguards

After several weeks of unusual sightings of large jelly fish, the cold weather has driven them away said commander of the Mazatlán lifeguards, Sergio Cervantes Rodríguez.

Today, swimmers can enjoy very quiet seas with low waves, almost like a swimming pool, the commander commented, adding there are many Canadians and Americans enjoying the calm water at the moment.

However, the waters off the beach from the Los Lobos statue to Valentino´s on the Malecón are still subject to dangerous currents and lifeguards have had problems with tourists not recognizing the danger.

Mayor Felton’s 2015 Wish List

Mazatlán’s mayor, Carlos Felton González, told reporters yesterday that next year he plans on making Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island) into a colonial town.
The mayor said, “We want the Isla de la Piedra to become kind of a colonial town so there is not a noticeable demarcation between the town and the sustainable Amaitlán project currently under construction.” He added that he wanted people to go to Stone Island not just for the beaches, but to visit the town, as well.
He pointed out the project would include rehabilitating the roads, building a wastewater treatment plant and remodeling and painting the facades of the town’s structures.
He said the Stone Island project is one of 20 he has planned for 2015.
Also included in his 2015 plans is the reconstruction of the palapas damaged and destroyed during Hurricane Norbert.
The mayor also told reporters he is looking for investors that would be interested in installing a cable car to Mazatlán’s lighthouse, El Faro.
