In 2007 Fonatur purchased 2,300 hectares for a new mega development to be called Playa Espiritu (Spirit Beach). The proposed development is on the Pacific coast southwest of Escuinapa. Because of economic conditions it has been impossible to obtain government funding to move this Fonatur project forward.
Yesterday Francisco Córdova Celaya, Secretary of Tourism for the state of Sinaloa, announced that the first hotel for Playa Espiritu would become a reality before this year is over. The funds for the continuation of the Playa Espiritu project were included in the government’s 2014-2018 infrastructure budget.
The secretary of Tourism said they were pleasantly surprised, as they thought funding for the resort project may have been cut.
