MEXICO CITY – On Thursday, President Enrique Peña Nieto presented the 12 winners with Premio Nacional del Emprendedor 2014 (National Entrepreneurship Award), aimed at promoting business growth throughout Mexico.
“Though entrepreneurship we can better recognize Mexican ingenuity,” Peña Nieto said, adding, “Entrepreneurship triggers creative growth and development. We have the potential to have a more prosperous Mexico by utilizing the creativity and the work of our people.”
Peña Nieto said that the financial legislative reforms passed in 2013 were aimed at raising productivity and democratizing the economy, with particular emphasis on small- and medium-sized businesses. He added that the telecommunications reforms could also work to help Mexican businesses by making technological information more accessible and lowering the cost of high-quality communications. The telecommunications draft secondary laws are currently under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies. Peña Nieto said that he and the Chamber are dedicated to drafting policy that will aid Mexican business. He said these changes are necessary “so that there is more competition, investment and innovation.”
According to government sources, Peña Nieto has charged the Secretaries of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo, and Education, Emilio Chuayffet, to promote a greater entrepreneurial culture in the country. Chuayffet will incorporate content that encourages greater entrepreneurial vocation in starting at basic level education courses.
Peña Nieto added that the federal government has strongly supported small business Mexico, by creating the National Institute of Entrepreneurship (Inadem) in 2013.
