Pianist and singer Fernando Teodoro Valadés Lejarza was born in Mazatlán.

Last evening the southern portion of Olas Altas was closed as the city dedicated a monument to hometown composer, pianist and singer Fernando Teodoro Valadés Lejarza, best known as Fernando Valadés.

At age 18 Fernando Valadés wrote his popular song “Te diré adiós” (“Say Goodbye”), which encouraged him to continue producing. He recorded over 100 compositions and toured in México, Central and South America, the Caribbean and the United States.

Fernando Valadés was born in Mazatlán in 1920 and died on December 14, 1978.

He retained deep roots in Mazatlán and many of his 13 children are still part of the community.

At the dedication last night Angel Rodriguez, pianist with the Angela Peralta Theater, accompanied local vocalists.
