Superhighway ‘boosts tourism’

The Durango-Mazatlán
Superhighway will be an effective link for trade, tourism, cultural exchanges and new business between both states and countries, Durango Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera said on Tuesday.

Herrera Caldera said that the increased ease of traveling between Mazatlán, Culiacán, Torreón and other cities in northern Mexico represents a serious commitment that must be followed up on to strengthen Durango’s tourism sector.

“We will all have to work hard to promote our tourist attractions and ensure that the number of visitors increases,” Herrera Caldera said.

Radamés Díaz Meza, Sinaloa undersecretary of economic promotion, said that he was very interested in undertaking projects together with Herrera Caldera and Durango City Mayor Esteban Villegas, taking advantage of the competitive advantages offered by the new highway.

Díaz Meza said that, during his meetings with representatives of the Sinaloa Economic Development Secretariat in Mazatlán last weekend, he was able to observe an increase in the number of Durango residents visiting Sinaloa since the highway opened, while more Sinaloans are also seen in Durango.

He went on to express his enthusiasm for what he called a surprising increase in the flow of visitors between the two states, adding that, “We’re ready to work to establish agreements that will lead to productive investments, tourist infrastructure and more jobs.”

“We believe this investment in highway infrastructure has been a success,” Díaz Meza said. “We really believe that it will boost the business potential of these two states in an important way … not just in terms of family vacations, but also cultural, economic and social tourism.”

Durango is a very classical city with a lot of history, he added. “It will continue to be something normal for Sinaloans to visit Durango.”
