For ten years Mazatlán’s DIF office (family services), in conjunction with civil associations and service clubs, has given the gift of free ocular prostheses to anyone of any age who has lost one eye or both.

In charge of the program is Dr. René Jiménez Castillo who together with a team of eight specialists evaluated, designed and yesterday implanted the prosthesis in children and adults of limited financial resources.

There are no age or condition restrictions to receive the help. The youngest recipient yesterday was two-year-old Jesús Antonio Velarde who lost an eye due to a tumour and six other Mazatlecans received double prostheses.

An ocular prosthesis costs between 30,000 and 50,000 pesos.

DIF announced that the second stage of examinations for the program will take place in November this year.
