American retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is coming to Mexico with two brands next year.
The casual wear retailer announced yesterday the opening of an Abercerombie & Fitch store in late spring and a Hollister store in late summer. Those two openings will be followed by a continuing rollout of stores in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún and Playa del Carmen, the company said.
Although Abercrombie & Fitch embarked upon international expansion in 2006 it has focused mainly on Europe and Asia and the stores have been owned by Abercrombie.
For its first venture into Mexico it has made a franchise agreement with distributor and retailer Grupo Axo, which operates several other foreign retailers, including Brooks Brothes, Coach, Crate and Barrel, Emporio Armani, Guess and Tommy Hilfiger.
Abercrombie & Fitch operates 834 stores in the United States and 166 in Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
Founded in 1892, the company has earned a reputation for racy photography in its marketing, employing semi-nude men and women from among the employees in its stores.
It is the second U.S. retailer to announce expansion into Mexico this fall. Williams-Sonoma said in October it will open stores next year through a franchise agreement with the department store chain Liverpool.
