One of the world’s largest telecommunications companies announced a US $1.5-billion investment in Mexico today. China-based Huawei Technologies Co. will spend the money over the next five years on four centers specializing in telecommunications services in Querétaro.
The company made the decision to invest based on its growth expectations for this country, said its Mexican chief executive officer, Mark Xueman. “Mexico is a priority country for Huawei.”
The four centers will be the Global Technical Care Center, the Regional Center for Network Operations, the Regional Innovation Center and the Regional Technical Training Center.
These centers, which will be located in the Innovation Technology Park in the municipality of El Marqués, will require more than 100,000 specialized employees in the next few years, the firm said.
The first will open during the second half of next year.
Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo welcomed the announcement, pointing out that total investment by China in Mexico hasn’t passed the $300 million dollar mark during the past 14 years. Globally China invested $100 billion last year, of which only $100 million was in Mexico.
Guajardo said Mexico wants to move up from the No. 3 spot to No. 2 among the world’s information technology providers in the next 10 years.
Today’s announcement was made during the Mexico Business Summit, which winds up tomorrow.
Huawei is the principal provider of equipment to telecommunications operators in Mexico and has operated here since 2001. It currently employs about 1,600 people. It operates in 170 countries and last year recorded sales of $39.6 billion.
