Mexico will entertain British royal visitors in November when Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, drop in while on a two-country Latin American tour.
The royal couple will celebrate the Day of the Dead upon their arrival in the town considered the birthplace of the relationship between Mexico and the United Kingdom. It was in Real del Monte, Hidalgo, that the first miners arrived from Cornwall in 1825 to work in the Mexican silver mining industry.
Not only did they bring new mining technology which revived the industry in Mexico, but soccer balls and Cornish pasties. Both survived, soccer going on to become Mexico’s national game, and pasties, or pastes, as a delicacy in Real del Monte, now home of the International Paste Festival.
The town of about 12,000 is also the site of the only British first world war memorial in Mexico, built to pay tribute to one of the Cornish immigrants, who died at the Battle of the Somme. Charles and Camilla will lay a wreath at a special ceremony.
From Real del Monte the couple’s itinerary takes them to Mexico City for a meeting with President Peña Nieto and his wife, as well as a reception at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso to announce a new promotional initiative.
The Year of the UK in Mexico and the Year of Mexico in the UK in 2015 will see each celebrate the other’s cultures and strengthen the relationship between the two. It will promote collaboration in culture, science, innovation and business.
Also on the royal couple’s agenda is a visit to the archaeological site Edzna Maya in Campeche, followed by their last stop in Mexico, Monterrey, where they will visit historic sites and view business innovation programs.
The visit, Charles’ fifth to Mexico, concludes November 5. They will arrive here after spending five days in Colombia.
