Tropical Storm Odile is strengthening off the coast of southern México and a tropical storm watch has been posted for the Mexican coast. Odile is centered about 210 miles (335 kilometers) southwest of Lazaro Cardenas and is drifting westward at 2 mph (4 kph)
Wednesday evening the government of México issued a tropical storm watch for its Pacific coast from Lazaro Cardenas, in the state of Michoacán, westward to Manzanillo, Colima.
Increasing swells are expected along the coast of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco and shipping located near that area should exercise caution, as well as those living or visiting the beach areas.
The National System of Civil Protection declared a blue alert for southern Sinaloa and Durango because of the presence of Odile, which later today or tomorrow could intensify and become a Category 1 hurricane adversely impacting the area.
A blue alert is the first level of five (which are blue, green, yellow, orange and red) and establishes internal procedures enabling communications, and maintaining high levels of attention to official information.
Gustavo Rangel Gómez, Capitan of the Mazatlán Port, said according to “forecasts issued by the National Hurricane Center and the Merchant Marine, Odile will run parallel to the coast and move northward at a very close distance to Mazatlán.”
He added, “We will wait to see how it will proceed but it is most likely that we will close the port to navigation by boats because of the risk and danger, according to the forecasts. On Thursday or Friday, depending on how the storm evolves we will make the decision to close the port.”
