The National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) initiated the fourth stage of the Program for Sustainability of Drinking Water Services and Sanitization in Rural Communities (Prossapys) on Monday with an investment of $562 million, with a goal to create infrastructure that improves water services in rural communities across Mexico.
Subdirector General of Drinking Water, Drainage and Sanitization at Conagua, Óscar Hernández, said that the resources will provide the IDB, through the Federal Government, $450 million of which $112 million will be invested by local governments to improve access to clean and reliable water supplies. The investment will go towards financing 1,500 drinking water projects across the country to benefit about 600,000 citizens. He also said that about 4,500 rural sanitization projects will benefit about 35,500 people.
Hernández said that the previous three stages of the Prossapys program included 1,940 rural drinking water, sewer and sanitization projects in 2,765 locations to benefit more than 1.1 million people living in rural Mexico.
Furthermore, 358 projects were developed to rehabilitate hydraulic infrastructure in 510 locations for the benefit of 245,000 inhabitants.
IDB Specialist Ricardo Martínez Lagunes said that in order to conclude the Prossapys program they have invested close to $900 million to offer drinking water service to more than 4 million people who live in rural areas. He said that the program has also brought sanitization services to more than 2 million people.
Hernández said that Conagua is committed to continue working in coordination and collaboration with the IDB, the National Savings and Financial Services Bank, the governors of states and municipalities, local government and local leaders with the goal to contribute to creating better water services for the rural populations of Mexico. He said that these steps will create better quality of life for Mexicans.
