Mexico CITY – PRD Senate Coordinator Miguel Barbosa Huerta, said Monday that telecommunications legislation should be approved next week in a special session that will correspond with Mexico’s first 2014 World Cup match, against Cameroon.
Next Tuesday, the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), chaired by Jorge Luis Preciado Rodríguez, will meet to review progress made in legislative committees.
Barbosa announced that in order to accommodate the special session, the Permanent Commission of the Congress will convene on June 10 rather than the schedule June 11.
“Without an agreement from the Political Coordination Board, the senators must finish the telecommunications discussions on June 10, so that from the 11th to the 15th the House of Representatives can debate the legislation.”
Barbosa said that his Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) is engaged in direct dialogue with the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to correct certain points which may be unconstitutional.
“We are at the same table, speaking clearly about our concerns,” Barbosa said. “Our goal is to enforce the constitution in a way that does not weaken the federal government. Confidentiality, privacy, community radio, indigenous radio, net neutrality, universities and self sufficiency are all issues which we are concerned about.”
Barbosa Huerta said that the negotiations are in the advanced stages, and if the legislation put foreword adheres to the constitution, the PRD will vote in favor.
